"Mashiach ben Dovid will not arrive until someone seeks a fish for a sick person and cannot find one."
From today's news:
Thousands of dead fish in Red River Love County, Oklahoma
Lake at Marden Park closed after dozens of dead fish found

This statement of our sages means, the way I understand the Previous Rebbe, that because the money will be hard to come by (perhaps because of a depression), or the products will be hard to come by (perhaps because of hyperinflation), we'll not be able to find fish even for those who evoke our mercy, the sickly - let alone for the healthy person.
ReplyDeleteThat's my understanding of what he says:
"'When they seek a sliver of herring for an invalid but can't find one'. We can thus imagine what smidgen of better foods healthy people will be able to find, who command less mercy than sick people."
You can find the Previous Rebbe's analysis of this "End of Days" scenario here:

(I believe your conclusion as to the meaning of the fish statement in the gemorah is taking the words too literally. (Unless, of course, you're being facetious))
I'm definitely taking it literally, because that is what is happening... fish are dying.
ReplyDeleteAs for sick people.... heh.... I don't think the world cares whether they eat fish or anything else.... everyone is out for self survival these days.
