5775: The Alter Rebbe's prediction ?

Once, when the Alter Rebbe was the ba'al koreh, he read a verse slightly incorrectly. Instead of reading 1775 he read 5775.  He did so several times and was corrected each time. This was in Parshas Pekudei 38:28, which mentions the sum of 1775 talents collected. ואת האלף ושבע המאות וחמשה ושבעים Instead of reading the "hei" of "ha-elef" (the thousand) with a "patach", he read it with a "tzeirei" (which turns the letter "hei" into 5).

When the 4th time occurred, he walked away and someone else finished the reading. When subsequently asked by the Mitteler Rebbe as to why and what had happened, he responded that at the time he saw a vision that Moshiach would come in 5775. He couldn't read it any other way.

This seems to have been reported by the Mitteler Rebbe even in his Sefer Imrei Bina (some say it was edited and then reinserted). Rabbi Leibel Groner quite a few years ago asked the Rebbe about it and whether he could confirm the story. He did.

He then asked if he could publicize it and the Rebbe said yes. Yet Rabbi Groner never has, until now. His reason for not doing so at the time was because the Rebbe was then coming out with the call of We Want Mashiach Now and that at any moment Mashiach could come.

As such, he felt uncomfortable to publicize this story then. Now, it seems, as we approach 5775, he revealed this conversation he had with the Rebbe and is publicizing it finally.

  1. Who is writing this article? To whom did Rabbi Groner confirm the story to? Rabbi Groner asked the Rebbe "quite a few years ago"? It has been 20 years since the Rebbe left us.
It seems strange that Rabbi Groner asked The Rebbe, the Rebbe allowed and then Rabbi Groner used his personal judgement to decide it should not be published at the time.
I am sorry for sounding so negative/skeptical. I have heard so many rumors like these in the past and have been let down so many times. Regarding what is being attributed to Rabbi Groener, how I wish all of this is true . May Moshiach come immediately!

  2. I heard from a well-known member of the Crown Heights community this week that he recalls hearing this story over 25 years ago. In the 1980s a Lubavitcher wasn't interested in something relating to Moshiach in 25 years down the line since we want Moshiach Now. But today, it's current events and very much in the spirit of Moshiach Now!

  4. Will you help me with this? I'm confused. The Alter Rebbe lived 1745-1812. The story was confirmed by the Metteler Rabbi 1773 - 1827. Then this post says that Rabbi Leibel Groner asked the rabbi about it, and it was confirmed... except that Groner wasn't born until 1932. How could he have asked the rabbi about it, if the rabbi died 105 years before Groner was even born? Or is there a piece missing?

    1. As the article says, the Mitteler Rebbe recorded the event in Sefer Imrei Bina. Rabbi Groner asked the question of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi M. M. Schneersohn, who confirmed that this is indeed recorded in the Sefer. When contemporary articles say ''Rebbe'' we know they are talking about the most recent Rebbe, i.e. Rabbi Schneersohn.

  5. As many of you have heard , there were two people who broke into the white house recently and one got all the way in ,literally.
From the Baal Shem Tov we learn that everything in this world that happens is for us to learn from. Well since this happened so close to Rosh Hashana , I think we can learn that our Tefilos can make it all the way in , It's a Shaas Ratzon just like these two made it all the way in - it is a Siman for us to Daven really hard and we will I'Y "H be Zoche that our tefilos will be accepted at the highest level - A Gut Gibensht Yohr

  6. Devorah,

I'm interested in your source of this information about the Imrei Bina where you say "some say it was edited and then reinserted". I couldn't find this text in the Imrei Bina on HebrewBooks, and even though I've seen an image of the Imrei Bina on a few Internet sites that has this, the paragraph numbering doesn't seem to match up. My assumption is that this was a commentary on the Imrei Bina that inserted this information, although I may be wrong if you can provide me with proof otherwise. Thanks.

    1. I don't really have any proof, I received the article from a good [Lubavitcher] friend who I trust, that's all I can tell you.

  8. Regarding 5775, none say it better than Harav Ginsburgh:
