ISRAEL is preparing to shut its nuclear reactor at Dimona, where it makes nuclear weapons, because of the site's vulnerability in a war with Iran.
The decision, taken by the Israel Atomic Energy Commission and the country's civil defence authorities, follows a realisation that the facility could be vulnerable to a missile attack.
The Haaretz newspaper quoted officials last week as saying they had concluded the reactor was no longer impenetrable in the event of war.
Deactivating the reactor in the southern Negev desert would minimise the dangers of nuclear fallout in the area "should it be targeted by missiles from as far away as Iran".
The official explanation is that work on the reactor is conducted for research and does not need to be carried out around the clock.
According to defence sources, the shutdown at Dimona would begin before the launch of any Israeli or US assault on Iran's nuclear facilities.

.....now if people could just realize that most our their arguments really are petty and work on rectifying what is most important....
ReplyDeleteSorry to press the point, but it's not just that the media is anti-religious in a general sense (which it is). The problem is that in the last month or so an unprecedented campaign of media incitement has started against hareidim and national religious, that is completely dehumanising. This is coupled with official hounding of the same on trumped up or flimsy charges. (Just to make the point, I know someone who was physically attacked by someone he knew yet the police was not interested. In the meantime someone who shouts a rude word is arrested. This is very selective police enforcement).
ReplyDeleteWhat concerns me most is that someone like yourself who obviously follows the news does not get it. Of course it is disgusting to harass, spit, shout abuse and misuse Holocaust imagery, but none of this is "the" problem. If an individual breaks the law, let the police deal with it and let the media report on it in the same way they report on individual acts by the non-religious. The problem is the campaign of mega incitement. If they are so keen to delegitimise us it makes me wonder what they have in store for us.
In the meantime there have been physical attacks on random hareidim in protest. Can you not see what is happening here?
With respect to your comment about "they want us to make aliya ...": I hate this attitude of Jews in chul. Make aliya if you want to, for yourself, accepting Israel warts and all, don't if you don't want to, but please don't talk about it or do it as if you are doing anyone a favour. Making aliya is a privilege. The failure to realise this is part of the problem people have with it.
When I made aliya it turned out that it was on Yom Hashoah. At first I thought that it was a bit depressing, and then I realised the significance.
