Snow: A Sign from the Heavens

HT: Rabbi Yossi Mizrachi   and Dr. Miguel Quaresma Brandão, Portugal

The daily page of the gemara learning [Daf Yomi] speaks about snow in Yerushalayim in the month of Tevet on ''erev Shabbat'' [Friday] - the exact day of the snowstorm in Israel coincided with the topic in the Gemara..

בס"ד Daf Yomi - ''A sign from heaven" (where the snow comes from) that the fast of Asarah be''Teves [the 10th of Tevet] BEH is soon coming to an end!

On Tuesday evening hundreds gathered at Congregation Beth Sholom in Lawrence to demonstrate support for Devorah Shochet of Woodmere who is in the throes of a battle with ALS --Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis---a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
The event was an outpouring of support on multiple levels for Devorah and her family. The medical industry is still searching or a cure for ALS which slowly paralyzes its victims. Her friends and neighbors organized an outstanding event that showed the extent of the care and concern for the Shochet family and their needs on many levels.
One of the organizers told me that a schedule has been drawn up amongst her friends, neighbors and family that has everything she needs covered around the clock. That is, she is never alone or never has to search around for someone to help with this or that chore or need. Whether it is something at home or something that needs to be shopped, her family and friends are there to make it happen.
It is an uphill climb and even a debilitating challenge with a community rising to the occasion, whether it is raising money for medical treatments out there that may work or simple everyday things. Unfortunately the family is all too well aware of what is involved in this battle as Devorah mother suffered with ALS.
In the meantime the community is mobilized in a most magnificent way beseeching the heavens for mercy and a Refuah Shlema for Devorah Rochel bas Miriam Chava, may she receive the miracle cure that she needs. For more information go to WWW.Facebook.Com/ShiratDevorahALS.

  11. that Gemara speaks about snow on erev Shabbat in month of Tevet. And the story of Hillel. I don't see any end of days in that Gemara. Where is the sign of end of days?

  12. The day of the snow was the tenth of Tevet, which is a fast day to commemorate the breaching of the walls of Yerushalayim.
(After Moshiach, fast days will become days of celebration.)

I don't know what snow on the tenth means. Any ideas would be appreciated. Is there anything special about snow?

Glad to see your post Devorah. May all be well for you.
