For The Sake Of Heaven

"How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel!" [Balak 24:5]

Rashi writes that Bilam was inspired by the Jewish tents "because he saw that the entrances were not opposite each other".

The arrangement of tents alludes to scholars convening together to discuss matters of Torah, each one offering his own interpretations.  Then, if their "entrances" - meaning their mouths - are "opposite each other" i.e. their intention is to show that their own ideas are superior than those of the others, then woe to them and their souls!

But if their intentions are for the sake of Heaven, then they are certainly deserving that the Divine presence should rest with them.

  1. Sorry this is off subject, but I think you once had a post about Rabbi Berland. I can't remember where I read it, maybe you saw it, too, about Rabbi Berland going into exile for another rabbi to fulfill some kind of decree? And that when he returned, it would be time for the redemption? Do you know about that?

Also, I saw a headline, but didn't read the article today where the rabbi's son and a group of former followers condemned him. At the same time, there are those who say he is completely innocent. I don't know what to think one way or the other, but his remarks carried in a YWN article sound like a very righteous man.

In any case, he is supposed to be returned to Israel either tomorrow or the next day at the latest. I hope the geulah is not far behind.
