When a person dies it means they have concluded their mission. Fact is, we all die eventually. When a tzaddik dies it is devastating for the world, of course, but the message in his name is interesting. You're very negative lately, Genoism.
Sorry Devorah. Just feel like people are so focused on moshiach that instead of seeing the repercussions of the events going on. The name thing is interesting but say moshiach doesn't come this year, or the next. People would have been so focused on moshiach that they don't realize that losing our gedolim is diminishing our knowledge of the torah everytime - which causes our generation to fall further, which in turn causes less people to be redeemed when moshiach does come.
The mitzvah of loving your fellow jew like yourself seems impossible today. Instead of mourning the loss of a great man we are instead excited about his name. Sure he probably fulfilled his mission here but we are going to be missing out on the guidance he was bringing to us.

We need to introspect- see what we need to do in our loives. WHen we lose a gadol, we need to look inside. We need to ask Hashem to guide us even more.

thats why on my blog i qualified with: "when one tzaddik dies, another rises." im hoping his name implies the obvious. the loss with him is the loss of every gadol - look to moshe rabbeinu. when he died, they mourned greatly, but 2 of the biggest things they mourned were the loss of his halachic knowledge and a leader who could lead them into the land. strikingly, its similar here. we are trying to secure eretz yisrael and strengthen halacha (as he was a gadol for his renowned halacha knowledge primarily) thus moshiach would be the obvious answer as the next tzaddik...only Hashem knows. regardless, Rav Elyashiv will be missed in more ways than one, and it is never easy to lose a leader in klal yisrael. But Hashem taught us how to move on and strive ever higher no matter what, as the end of the chumash and beg. of yehoshua taught us this very lesson. i think you are right leah, and frankly: the answer to guiding us more - in our times moshiach is what we need! if not now, when?
btw, i only posted my blogpost, because i had written it when rav elyashiv was sick and people wanted kavannah for his n ame. rav fish had sent out this dvar torah for many months. i posted his name for one final time. i hope i could add merit to his name's continued mission. it was a very obvious find in his name, i hope not for naught - God willing moshiach is close.
Honestly folks, I don't know how many of you live in Israel, but with our behavior, our midot, our business practices here in the 'Holy'land you expect the Mashiach this Av. On what merit really can you expect anyone to stand up?

Hello Batya, Good to see you. I usually hop onto your blog from here. I understand that you, in our Holy (blessed) Land are unfortunately plagued by all those things that you write. It's not good. With that I must agree. You ask: "On what merit ... can you expect anyone to stand up?" I sure don't have the answer. But if it had to come to this (!), that a Man of such stature as HoRav Yosef Sholem Elyashim zt"l had to be taken from our midst, then surely HE WILL BE A MEILITZ YOSHER FOR AM YISRAEL and KLAL YISRAEL! And we badly need that!
When Jews truly speak to one another with kindness, don't hate each other in their heart, sincerely forgive and want for the other what they want, maybe things will improve. G-d willing we can get over our egos and divisions and bring mashiach. It's a big pill to swallow. It's easier to say than to do.

Leah you do know the term "gadol Hador " is a relatively new ter and concept.

I connected this to the Gaon's depth and breadth of Torah knowledge comparable, perhaps, to that of Rahi!
