The Vision of the Chazon Ish Regarding Redemption!

Has there ever been so much confusion?  I don't think so.  Just looking at the videos coming up on my You Tube feed is enough to give me a headache.

Then I listened to this video, and it's auto-dubbed into English for those who can adjust their You Tube settings, otherwise it's in Hebrew.  Here is my rough transcript, please forgive any errors.

"When they hear the footsteps of the Moshiach and his footsteps are over Jerusalem, the Moshiach will wait until they consume one another, and then he will appear.

It is frightening to hear the words of the Chazon Ish.... how he looked into the future and saw exactly what is happening today.  The Right fights the Left, the Left fights the Right....... the Judicial system fights the government, and the government fights the Judicial system... the Attorney General, who is supposed to be the legal advisor to the government, does everything against the government, and the government fires her and the High Court of Justice decides that it has no power to fire her.... the High Court is entirely against the government, and against the Hareidim as well, and each side claims that what the other is doing is illegal....

When a terrorist kills a Jew, [they say] that shouldn't affect the rights of his wife and children - because what is the connection?  But when a Hareidi person doesn't want to go into the army, his children and wife will not receive day-care, apartments, everything is taken from them - these are things that are clearly illegal.

Each side is consuming one another.

The anniversary of the passing of the Chazon Ish falls on 15 Cheshvan, the elections are expected the next day the 16 Cheshvan, which is the yarzheit of Rabbi Elazar Menachem Man Shach.  Perhaps HKBH will see to it that everything will explode, the election process will hit a snag, it will turn out that each side is cheating each other.... it's not just that China, Iran and Russia are trying to rig the elections, but even from within, all the righteous ones.... people don't really care about democracy - in a democracy everything is permitted: to forge and to lie.... you just mustn't get caught. Already Leiberman is saying that whoever is not useful to the State, should not vote, and he will decide who is useful or not.

We can see the vision of the Chazon Ish regarding the coming of Moshiach

The Archibald Prize is Australia's most prestigious annual portrait painting award, a AU$100,000 prize, and a major cultural event managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This year's winner painted by Michael Zavros: Alex Ryvchin wearing tefillin. The work was dedicated to a fallen friend of Alex Ryvchin, who was killed when IS-linked gunmen opened fire on a Chabad Chanukah event.

Ryvchin, born in Ukraine, previously served as a spokesman for the Zionist Federation UK. He has published four books, and now serves as co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the country’s equivalent of the Board of Deputies. Zavros remarked that Ryvchin is an “unmistakably and unashamedly Jewish” leader.

Thank You Boy George

Boy George has released a song entitled "We Will Dance Again" -

You say genocide, I say war - When you're attacked, that's what the army's for - Does it get ugly? You bet it does - When I know you wanna kill - Every last one of us - Every last one of us

You never mention October 7 - Murder through Tel Aviv - For the crime of dancing  - You condemn the Jews, with selective memory - Musicians holding flags, mouthing like sheep - Propaganda fueled by the Internet feels so weak..... we will dance again.....

But if you're ever confused.... I stand with the Jews.... I don't feel brave, I just need to behave like a human....

The Life of the Tzadik

Art Baruch Nachshon

''From there, they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Yotvath..'' [Eikev 10:7]

Rashi: And at Moserah, you made a great mourning for the death of Aaron, which was the cause of this [your retreat], and it seemed to you as though he had died there. Moses juxtaposed this reproof with the breaking of the tablets to indicate that the death of the righteous is as grievous to the Holy One, blessed is He, as the day the tablets were broken...

Why is a tzadik [Aaron] compared to the tablets?

The writing on the tablets represented the ''soul'' of the tablets, and the tablets themselves, their ''body''. The fact that the Ten Commandments were engraved into the tablets, and not merely written onto them, means that the words and the tablets [''soul'' and ''body''] became one single, indivisible entity.

Likewise in the case of a tzadik, it is not merely that his soul interacts with his body, but that the tzadik's physical life is totally at peace with his soul such that ''the life of the tzadik is not a physical life, but a spiritual life''.

Tu b'Av

L'illui nishmat Mordechai ben Menachem a"h

The Jewish mini-holiday of Tu B’Av

The 15th of Av [begins Tuesday night] is undoubtedly a most mysterious day. A search of the Shulchan Aruch [Code of Jewish Law] reveals no observances or customs for this date, except for the instruction that the tachanun [confession of sins] and similar portions should be omitted from the daily prayers [as is the case with all festive dates], and that one should increase one’s study of Torah, since the nights are beginning to grow longer, and “the night was created for study.” And the Talmud tells us that many years ago the “daughters of Jerusalem would go dance in the vineyards” on the 15th of Av, and “whoever did not have a wife would go there” to find himself a bride.

And the Talmud considers this the greatest festival of the year, with Yom Kippur (!) a close second!

Indeed, the 15th of Av cannot but be a mystery. As the “full moon” of the tragic month of Av, it is the festival of the future redemption, and thus a day whose essence, by definition, is unknowable to our unredeemed selves.

Yet the unknowable is also ours to seek and explore.

Asking Forgiveness From the Deceased

Question: In my past I wronged someone who is unfortunately no longer alive today. Is there any way I can make amends?

Response: Rabbi David Rosenfeld [Aish]

As a matter of fact, the Talmud [Yoma 87a] discusses your exact situation. The proper way to make amends is to go to his grave accompanied by ten people and to publicly confess that you sinned to the God of Israel and to him and that you did such and such, and you beg his forgiveness. At the end the others respond three times "machul lach" [“it is forgiven to you”]. You should be barefoot during the course of this.

If it is too far for you to travel, you can send a messenger to do the same, accompanied by ten people. He should state that he is the agent of so and so, and has come for the purpose of apologizing for such and such an act etc.

If you have no way of knowing where he is buried or it would be very difficult to arrange a visit to his grave, you can gather ten people where you are and do the same procedure. My wishes that you achieve full atonement.

The Three Levels of Tzadikim

In every generation there exists 36 tzadikim nistarim [hidden righteous men] - sometimes known as "the Lamed Vav-niks" - [Lamed Vav is Hebrew for 36], whose existence sustain the world.

When one of them dies, G-d finds another replacement.

A tzadik nistar is a hidden tzadik, whose righteousness remains unknown to his community. In every generation there are 36 tzadikim nistarim in addition to 36 revealed tzadikim. [see Leviatan and Behemot]. Together they combine to form the 72 "bridges" [corresponding to the 72 Names of G-d] described in the Zohar as linking together the concealed and revealed worlds. It requires tremendous self sacrifice for a tzadik nistar to reveal himself to the world. This was first accomplished in full by the Ba'al Shem Tov.

A tzadik is someone who has succeeded in fully overcoming the evil inclination of his animal soul [and has converted its potential into good] and who dedicates himself to spiritually elevating his people.

There are in general three levels of the tzadik:

1. A "complete tzadik" [tzadik gamur] who not only vanquishes in full his innate evil inclination, but even transforms it into good [for which reason he is referred to as tzadik v'tov lo," a tzadik who possesses only good].

2. An "incomplete tzadik" [tzadik she'eino gamur] who has not yet completed the task of vanquishing his evil inclination, though he has mineralized it in essence [for which reason he is called a tzadik v'ra lo," a tzadik who [still] possesses [a bit of] evil].

3. A "relative tzadik" [tzadik b'shem hamushal, or tzadik b'din] whose merits exceed his liabilities [see Tanya, chapt. 1].

Challah: Not Just Plaited Bread

A recent discussion on a  social media group caused some controversy as many Jewish women did not know the true facts about challah.

Someone asked where to buy challah..... and people responded by naming several local bakeries, one of which was not a kosher bakery and which was operated by a non-Jew.

So here are the facts.

Challah must be made by a Jewish person, and there is a very valid reason for this. The literal meaning of challah in the Torah refers to the commandment of hafrashat challah—setting aside and consecrating a small portion of dough to G-d before baking.   Only a Jew can do this setting aside and consecration of the small portion of dough.

We separate challah dough to fulfill a biblical commandment [mitzvah] that originally provided a portion of bread dough to the kohanim [Jewish priests] serving in the Holy Temple. Because the Temple no longer stands, we now set aside and burn a small piece of the dough in remembrance of this practice, symbolizing that our sustenance comes from G-d and is not for our use alone.

A non Jewish person does not have this obligation, and therefore even if they do it - which is highly unlikely as they probably don't know - it is not acceptable and does not fulfill the commandment. Only a Jewish person can make real challah.  Any other challah originating from a source that is not Jewish is not acceptable.

If you didn't know this, and have been buying your challot from a bakery where the baker is not a Jew, then don't worry, because you can rectify this situation by fixing the problem and going to a Jewish bakery.   By doing this, you will have done teshuva, and your past sin of buying the wrong [fake]challah will be turned into a mitzvah, because you have rectified the problem.

As Rebbe Nachman said: "If you believe you can damage, then believe you can fix.... if you believe you can harm, then believe you can heal."  That quote is at the top of my blog, although it is hard to read now, a bit blurry, but it's there.

Even non-Jews, Bnei Noach, who make a blessing over challah on Shabbat, should adhere to this rule, otherwise their challah is fake challah.

According to traditional Jewish law [Halacha], a non-Jewish person cannot perform the religious separation of challah [hafrashas challah], and any separation they attempt is considered invalid. Furthermore, dough that belongs to a non-Jewish person is exempt from the obligation of challah separation entirely.

I hope no-one takes offence to anything written here, it is Torah, and there is no need to be offended.

The Hidden Treasure

Art: Dima Dmitriev

''And from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him...'' [Va'Etchanan 4:29]

Chassidic thought teaches that in order for any entity to exist at all, God must renew it continually, by enlivening it with a spark of His own Existence.  Without being connected to God - the True Existence - the entity is unable to exist.  Thus, even the forces of evil must contain a Godly spark that enables them to exist.

But why, then, is it possible for the forces of evil to conceal this presence of Godliness within them?

The answer is: To make possible the amazing elevation that can be reached through teshuvah.

When a person has regressed to a very low spiritual state, the Torah teaches us that ''from there [i.e. from amidst the forces of evil] you will seek God''.

This teaches us that the Godly revelation which a person reaches through teshuvah is disproportionate to the effort involved, like ''finding'' a previously hidden treasure, as the verse states ''And you will find Him''.

Handing the Keys to Moshiach

Rabbi Moshe Ben Tov [1930 - July 16, 2010] was a renowned Kabbalist, known for his unique ability to read mezuzot, earning him the title “Roeh Mezuzot,” or “the Mezuzah Seeker.” Through his extraordinary spiritual insight, Rabbi Ben Tov could discern the past and present conditions of individuals by examining their mezuzot. This practice made him a revered figure in the world of Jewish mysticism, and people from all walks of life sought his blessings and guidance.

During  a visit to the Prime Minister's Office, Rabbi Ben Tov made a remarkable statement to Netanyahu.

“It is very important that your love of Israel continue until the Moshiach comes because you are going to stay in office and are going to meet him,” Rabbi Ben Tov said to Netanyahu. “You are the one who will give him the keys to this office.”

The Month of Av and the War with Iran

Miracles can happen on Tisha b'Av, according to this short video Why Now? The Month of Av and the War with Iran, which is in Hebrew, but for me it was auto-dubbed into English.

Iran is the head of the snake, Hashem is performing miracles for us in the 9 days.   With the help of Hashem we hope to see a great miracle on Tisha b'Av.   It is recommended to attack on this day for this reason.

IY"H Tisha b'Av will no longer be a bad day for the people of Israel  - these are days that,  with the help of Hashem, will turn into joy and gladness.  We need to hold on to the name of Hashem and await Redemption and we will see great miracles.

5 Av - Yarzheit Arizal

The Arizal [1534-1572] - Rabbi Isaac Luria was the most famous Kabbalist in the city of Safed, Israel who became known as the "Holy Arizal" or ARI, an acronym for “The G-dly Rabbi Isaac of Blessed Memory.”

The Arizal passed away at the age of 38, and it was only during the last two years of his life that he met his foremost disciple, Rabbi Chaim Vital. The Arizal himself never wrote any books, however all his words were faithfully recorded by Rabbi Chaim Vital in what is known as Kitvei Ari, the “writings of the Arizal.” The Kitvei Ari is the key to the secrets of the Zohar, and it was the Arizal who formulated the Kabbalah into a comprehensive system. Rabbi Chaim Vital writes in the name of the Arizal that, “It is a Mitzvah to reveal this wisdom.” Until the time of the Arizal, knowledge of Kabbalah was not known outside of the tightly knit circle of the tzaddikim.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

This one is for Sherry :)  and everyone else who is awaiting Geula

Disclaimer: I must add this... no-one can definitely pinpoint a date for Moshiach's arrival. Moshiach can come at any time.

If you don't have young kids, then you don't understand.  They've been saying "six seven" for a long time. It's a chant, and as soon as they hear anyone say 6 7 they all start screaming "Six Seven".

Yoel 1:1

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.....

and if you still don't understand..... it represents the final digits of the Hebrew years 5786 and 5787.... when we are expecting our Redeemer.

Maimonides' [Rambam] Thirteen Principles of Faith. Specifically, the 12th principle states: "I believe with complete faith in the coming of Moshiach, and although he may tarry, nevertheless, I wait every day for him to come".

Subtle Slander

"These are the words that Moshe spoke to all Israel" [Devarim 1:1]

Why, asked the Megaleh Amukos [R' Nosson Nota Shapira] does the verse state "...that Moshe spoke to all Israel" and not simply "...that Moshe spoke to Israel"?

The acronym of the word "eileh" he answered is "avak lashon hara" - the dust of evil speech - subtle types of slander.

Chazal state in Maseches Bava Basra [165b] "Most individuals transgress the sin of theft, a small minority transgress the sin of illicit relations, but all transgress the sin of avak lashan hara."  The grave sin of lashon hara is a sin that all of Israel might come to transgress, so all Jews must be cautioned of the danger it presents.  The verse therefore states: "These are the words that Moshe spoke to all Israel."

"Menachem" Av

H/t Daily Dose Motivation Group

Most people think Av is the month of destruction.

But perhaps Hashem wants us to notice something else first.

The letters that spell *אב*… when reversed… spell *בא*. *Coming.*

Our Sages teach that _Menachem_, which means Comforter, is one of the names of Mashiach.

Maybe that’s how Hashem wants us to enter Av.

*Menachem ba.* Mashiach is coming.

If that's how Hashem asks us to begin Av… then perhaps this month isn't only about remembering what was lost. It's also about looking forward to what is coming.

*The story isn’t over.*

*The Geulah is coming!*

May we greet Moshiach _very_ soon.

The Final Redemption Is Happening NOW!

H/t Sherry

Rabbi Pinchas Winston with Aaron Sokol

Are we witnessing the Final Redemption? In this groundbreaking interview, Rabbi Pinchas Winston explains the Torah's timeline of history and why he believes our generation is living through an extraordinary moment. He explores the prophecies of the End of Days, the rebuilding of the Third Temple, and the coming of Moshiach, laying out the signs that many believe point toward the Final Redemption.

The Ten New Creations in the Era of Moshiach

Today is Rosh Chodesh Av, the beginning of the Nine Days.  The Kaf HaChayim [551:1] states that everyone who meticulously observes the halachos of the first ten days of Av [which you can find here], thereby demonstrating his personal mourning over the churban of Yerushalayim, will merit to witness these ten miracles, listed below.

The Medrash [Medrash Rabbah Shmos 15:21] teaches that Hashem will bring forth ten new creations in the era of Moshiach:

1. He will create a new light for the world.
2. He will bring forth a freshwater spring from Yerushalayim whose waters will heal all illness.
3. He will create trees that every month will produce new fruits that have curative powers.
4. All the cities of Eretz Yisroel will be rebuilt, including even Sodom and Amora.
5. Hashem will rebuild Yerushalayim with sapphire stone that will glow and thereby attract all the nations of the world to come and marvel at the beauty of the city.
6. The cow and the bear will graze together, and their young will play together. [See Yeshaya 11:7].
7. Hashem will make a covenant with all the creatures of the world and banish all weapons and warfare. [See Hoshea 2:20]
8. There will be no more crying in the city of Yerushalayim.
9. Death will perish forever.
10. Everyone will be joyful, and there will be an end to all sighing or worry.

May we all merit to see these miracles speedily and in our days.

The GOG Google Code

H/t Miguel

This was discovered by the Brazilian kabbalist Misha'Ël Ha'Levi.

Thus saith the Lord GOD: It shall come to pass in that day, that things shall come into thy mind, and thou shalt devise an evil device;

These are verses 9 and 10 of Ezekiel 38. Breaking the sequence we have “Calculation of the Evil Computer,” and at the beginning of verse 10 toward verse 9 we have “YAHOO (יאהו),” which was one of the first digital Internet search engines.

This reinforces that we are in the era of Gog Aretz ha’Magog. In verse 2  'Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him',  you have “Ben-Adam sim panêcha el-Gog  בֶּן־אָדָ֗ם שִׂ֤ים פָּנֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶל־גּוֹג֙ , and ‘el-Gog’ reversed is Google.

So in verses 2 and 14 we have the same spelling as Google when ‘el-Gog’ is mentioned, and ‘YAHOO’ encoded in reverse in verses 9 and 10 where ‘calculation and evil computer’ are mentioned.

The Eye of a Needle

Art Vladimir Kush

As the Talmud says: “Open a door as tiny as the eye of a needle, and I will open your gates wide enough to let carts and horse-drawn carriages drive through.”

All you need to do is make one small step... and Hashem will help you do whatever it is you're trying to achieve.  Ask Hashem to help you, believe that will happen, and you will be amazed.  Just do that one thing that has been defeating you all your life.  Take control of it and you will receive help from Above.  It won't be as hard as you think it will be, you will have Divine assistance if you seek it.  Go straight to the top, don't mess around with the middle-men, go straight to Hashem and ask for assistance.

Open a door as tiny as the eye of a needle and Hashem will open the gates wide enough to let carts and carriages drive through.

Yes, it works.  Just try.  Don't let go of Hashem though, keep talking to Him and keep praying to Him to get you and your carriages through the hole.

This War Is Gog and Magog... The Worst Is Yet to Come

H/t Sherry and Anonymous

The dream of the Baba Sali, in English.

Is the current war with Iran part of Gog and Magog? Could the ceasefire be only a pause before a much greater conflict?

In this interview, Baba Baruch Abuhatzeira shares a remarkable dream he says he received from his father, the Baba Sali, along with his understanding of the events unfolding in Israel today. He argues that the current conflict is far from over, that the next stage of the war could arrive at any moment, and explains why he believes these events are connected to the final redemption and the coming of Moshiach.

What do the prophets say about the final war? Are we witnessing the beginning of Gog and Magog, or simply another chapter in history? Watch the full interview and decide for yourself.

Not Just Clouds

"Oh they're just clouds" - Nope.

These are two of the passing planets, right on top of us.  This is what they look like, colours are consistent, and this is why we are seeing deep red sunsets, purple skies and orange and green, which we've never seen before.   If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to look up more often.

I know people find it impossible to believe. Wrap your mind around it, it's really happening.

Being Put to the Test

by Rabbi David Pinto Shlita

The following story, which took place in the Israeli city of Holon, stuns everyone who hears it. It makes people realize that there is a G-d in Israel, that there is a Judge, a judgment, and that a person can’t do whatever he wants.

A man once hired a carpenter to do some work in his home. He was a skilled craftsman who did particularly good work, and the man gave him the keys to his house, allowing him to work even when nobody was at home.

One day, while the carpenter was still in the home, the man arrived and made a serious accusation: He said that an expensive jewel belonging to his wife had been on a table in the hallway, and that witnesses had even seen it that very same morning. “Since no one but you has been here since then,” the man said, “we suspect that you stole it and we want you to give it back.”

Despite the vehement denials of the carpenter, the man continued to accuse him of the crime. When the carpenter refused to pay the man, he brought him to court.

Although we have known for a long time that secular courts are very poor at rendering fair decisions, many people were still stunned to hear how foolish their verdict was in this case. Based on witness accounts of having seen the jewel in the hallway that morning, the carpenter was ordered to pay the man its full value, namely 70,000 NIS. The injustice done to the carpenter was actually two-fold. First, it wouldn’t be easy to find such an amount of money to pay the man, especially for a craftsman who works hard for a living; and second, once people learned of the court’s verdict, he would have no clients left, since nobody would want to hire him, a carpenter now known as a sleazy thief who had the audacity to steal a precious jewel.

The second part of this story is that the carpenter was so affected by this incident that he died. But the story doesn’t end there. In fact it’s barely begun.

A few days after the carpenter died, the man’s wife opened her jewelry box and found her precious jewel inside!

It seems that she had forgotten that she placed it there herself, which is why she and her husband had been certain that the carpenter had stolen it. Now it turned out that all the accusations brought against the carpenter had been completely baseless.

The man’s wife was shocked by what had happened, and she asked a Rav how she could rectify things according to the Torah. The Rav advised her to gather a minyan and to go to the grave of the carpenter and ask forgiveness for everything that had happened to him. The woman agreed, but her husband objected, for he was afraid that once people heard that they had gone to his grave asking for forgiveness, it would be interpreted in the wrong way. Hence he refused.

And now we come to the last part of the story. Barely a few days later, the family of the man who had hired the carpenter was also sitting shiva for the man himself, who suddenly died.

Other than the obvious conclusion that there is a Judge and a judgment, there is another lesson to draw from this story. The Shelah writes that when Heaven decrees that a person should die, sometimes the defenders that he created by his merits and good deeds intercede for him, and he is given another chance.** In our story, defenders had intervened on the man’s behalf, and Heaven decided to give him another chance. If he used it properly, he would have been forgiven and the decree against him annulled.

If he had agreed to the Rav’s suggestion and gone to the grave of the carpenter, it would have been possible for Heaven to forgiven him. Yet since he refused, the most severe decree was enacted against him.

In general, says the Shelah, in such a case a test is sent to a person in the form of a poor man who comes to ask for tzeddakah in a very rude way, enough to infuriate anyone. Even though he has already received tzeddakah, he returns a second and a third time, not content with what he has received. This is how a man is put to the test, says the Shelah. Will he explode and get angry with the poor man, or instead – and despite the natural disdain that fills him – will he show compassion and overcome his evil inclination?

Hence when we encounter such a poor man – one who can truly exasperate the average individual – we must understand that it is very possible he may have been sent from Heaven in order to put us to the test, to see if we will control our natural tendencies and treat him with kindness, in which case the decree that may have been enacted against us will be annulled.

This is important to remember when we hear constant requests for donations being made in synagogue, when representatives of devoted charity organizations that do marvelous work go from one synagogue to the next in order to reach the public with their uplifting words, their goal being to collect funds for orphans and similar causes.

Sometimes we may think, “How many times can these people ask for money? How many? Can anyone possibly think that the wallets of bnei Torah are filled with unlimited supplies of money?”

There are cases in which, because of such thoughts, we decide that we are not going to give. In our minds, we object to the people who come to collect tzeddakah, and we come to the conclusion that enough is enough – that we can’t give any more – and that we’re not giving this time. We must realize that by making such a decision, we may be sealing our own fate.

– Barchi Nafshi

** This actually happened to me.  Someone who had done me wrong, for many years, was injured [almost fatally].  I did not know about it, as I was out of town.  But I had a dream, and in the dream I was in Shamayim, I was giving evidence in the Bet Din in Shamayim.  I was asked a question: "should he live or should he die?"

It wasn't that I was in charge of the matter, they just wanted my opinion.  I responded that he should live.  I was in the World of Truth at that time, and my soul responded according to the World of Truth, not according to the World of Lies.

When I awoke from the dream, I remembered it, but I didn't understand it, because I didn't know what had happened to this person.  A few hours later, someone came and told me that such and such a thing had happened and that this person was hanging on to life by a thin thread.  I remembered the dream very clearly... and I was shocked.

I'm sure other people were also called up to Shamayim to give evidence.... I wasn't the only one.... but that's how it works.  I just have the z'chus of being able to remember these dreams. [Devorah]

"A Time, Times and a Half of Time"

Images and concept created by Yosef Shidler

250 years.... is this a "time, times and a half of time" ? [100 years being a "time"]

The words inscribed on the wall were Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin (or Peres]. Daniel explained their Divine meaning:

Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting (deficient).
Parsin/Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

Why Tzadikim Atone For All of Us

  by Rabbi Elchanan Lewis

Question: How can the death of a Tzaddik become a Kapparah [atonement]?

Answer: The Tzadik is not a personal individual that has an impact only on himself, he is a public figure who impacts on all those around him; the loss of a Tzadik is therefore a public loss, not an individual or family one. The Tzadikim are here not for themselves, rather for others - that is how they live their lives and that is how they also die; Just as the death serves as atonement to the deceased himself, so the departure of a Tzadik does to his community.

The Three Weeks

The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls out in the summer. - or winter if you're in the Southern Hemisphere. This is when we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and our launch into a still-ongoing exile. With an eye to the future, we also learn about the Third Temple, which is yet to be built.

The period begins on the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, a fast day that marks the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans in 69 CE.  This year it begins on the night of July 1st.

It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people . . . read more  about Tisha B’Av and the 3 Weeks: click here

Fooling Yourself

Art: "Seekers of the Truth" - Mike Worrall

It is told that R' Pinchus of Koretz used to warn his disciples: ‘Never fool yourselves! Above all a Jew must be thoroughly honest with himself!’

Once one of his students challenged him. ‘But Rebbe,’ he said, ‘one who fools himself actually thinks he is being honest with himself. So how are we ever to know if we are being honest, or just fooling ourselves?’

‘You have asked wisely, my son,’ the Rebbe said. ‘The answer, however, is simple. It is written in Tanna d-Bei Eliyahu [an ancient Midrashic source] that anyone who is careful to speak words of truth will be sent a malach [an angel] who shows him the truth. One who speaks words of sheker [falsehood] will be sent a malach who fools and deceives him.

So, if you will be careful to always tell the truth, you will never “fool yourself.” If not, well …’ This is a very telling incident. One can live his⁄her entire life in deception, of others and of himself, and not have even the faintest notion he is doing so. R' Pinchus also used to tell his disciples: ‘It is better to choke, than to utter a lie.’”

R' Raphael said: “The Sages teach that the greatest labor of man should be to avoid self-deceit. But how can a man do so when he is deceived and believes his action to be right? By obeying the counsel of his friend, since his friend cannot profit by permitting the deceit to continue. We are also taught that he who labors for truth creates for himself an Angel of Truth who acts as a monitor to warn him of falsehood.”

R' Pinchas said: “He who is filled with self-importance lies to himself and he fools others to believe his importance."
