The Delay of the Redemption

Rabbeinu Yisrael Meir HaCohen of Radin, zt"l, devoted a substantial portion of his day to arouse Jewish people's awareness to the prohibition of lashon hara, and he even wrote a sefer on the subject. 

The Chafetz Chaim believed that one of the main reasons for the lengthiness of our Exile was because of negligence and ignorance concerning one's proper speech. (As he put it, there is a lot of ignorance concerning this matter and people are used to saying whatever they want, without considering whether it is permissible or perhaps constitutes rechilut or lashon hara).

Rashi explains that Aharon was embarrassed and afraid to approach the altar.  Moshe therefore said to him ''Why are you embarrassed? This is what you were selected for.''

The Baal Shem Tov elucidated Rashi's words.  Moshe was saying to Aharon: Why are you embarrassed?  It is specifically due to the fact that you possess the character trait of humility and that you feel ashamed before Hashem that you were chosen to be the Kohen - ''This is what you were selected for!"

War against Amalek: From Purim to Pesach

This Rabbi tells of a war that will be against Amalek. It will start on Purim and will end on the evening of Pesach.  

As we know, this war began three days before Purim, but bear in mind that the 11 Adar is the earliest date that the Megillah can be read.

That in the future, quickly, in our days, [will be the] war [of] Amalek, and his revival will be on the evening of the Chag of Pesach, behold yours before you, and the start [is] on the day of Purim, and the conclusion and the end/completion [is] on the evening of Pesach/Erev Pesach, they are 720 hours, a total of 3 times “Amalek, ” to nullify/cancel/remove [the] shiur komah [the dimensions of the body] [of] the klipah completely in thought, speech and deed/action, and by this you will understand [the] reason [for] bedikat chametz/the search for chametz.

As the war began three days before Purim, can we expect it to end three days before Pesach?

I don't know, it's a question not a statement.  For your info.... 720 hours is 30 days.

Heating Up

This blog may not be updated as I have a ton of Pesach things to do, and honestly .... the world is so insane at the moment that I just want to disappear.

I will leave you with this video of our two suns.... as you can see there are two lens flares to match the two sources of light.   Yes we have two suns, and the second sun has an entire solar system passing us by daily, which is why parts of the USA are experiencing a great deal of heat way too early in the season.

35 Years On...

Saddam Hussein initiated the Gulf War by ordering the invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. 

The current war with Iran is also in the Persian Gulf and again we see oil and gas supplies being destroyed, just as the Kuwaiti oil wells were set alight in 1991.  History repeating itself.  

The same prophecy that was discussed by Rav Laniado 470 years ago in Sefer Kli Paz. 

Isaiah 34:  [6]The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Botzrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. 

[8]For the LORD hath a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the Controversy/Cause of Zion.  [9]And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch/tar, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch/tar. 

The last pasuk speaks of burning oil wells. 

On 27 Menachem Av 5750 / 18 August 1990, the Lubavitcher Rebbe's Sicha on Shabbat Parshat Re'eh  linked the Gulf War in 1990/91 with the coming of Moshiach.

Moshiach didn't arrive in 1991, unfortunately, and somehow we've made it to 2026 and this new war in the Gulf. However, the Rebbe's words about the coming of Moshiach apply just as well to this current war, as they did to the previous one in 1990, especially bearing in mind that the 1991 war ended on Purim, and the 2026 war began three days before Purim, which was actually the day Queen Esther began her three day fast.  

This is what the Rebbe said in 1990:

May this lead to the time when we see the Third Beis HaMikdash openly revealed on this earthly plane. This is particularly relevant at present when we see the omens portending the Messianic redemption mentioned by our Sages. In particular, it is significant to cite a passage from the Yalkut Shimoni which has been publicized in recent weeks: 

Rabbi Yitzchok declared: In the year when the Messianic king will come, all the gentile nations will challenge one another. The King of Persia will challenge an Arab king and the Arab king will go to Aram for advice. The King of Persia will then destroy the entire world. All the nations of the world will panic and become frightened, falling on their faces, suffering contractions like labor pains. The Jews will also panic and become frightened, asking, “Where will we go? Where will we go?” [G‑d will then reveal Himself, and] tell them: “My children, you need not fear. Everything which I did, I did for your sake. Why are you frightened?... The time for your redemption has come.” 

"This ultimate redemption will not resemble the first redemption which was followed by aggravation and subjugation to other powers. After the ultimate redemption, there will be no aggravation and subjugation to other powers.” Our Sages taught: When the Messianic king will come, he will stand on the roof of the Beis HaMikdash and call out to the Jews, “Humble ones, the time for your redemption has come.” [Yalkut Shimoni, Yeshayahu 499]

Everyone should realize that there is no reason to become frightened and we have the promise: “The time for your redemption has come.” 

May we see Mashiach standing on the roof of the Beis HaMikdash and may he announce: “Mashiach is here.”

The Month of Nissan

The first mention of the name Nissan is in Megilas Esther when Haman draws lots to decide which day of the year he will kill the Jews. This event, says the Megila, took place in the month of Nissan. The Bnei Yisaschar says the name Nissan is for “Nissim” miracles. It is a month of open miracles where Hashem turned the natural world on its head to rescue His beloved nation. The Torah tells us this special time was planned from the creation of the world and will always be a time of miracles and redemption for Am Yisroel for all generations.

The word Nes is made of the letters “Nun” and “Samech”. The gemara tells us [Brachos 4b] that although in “Ashrei” each pasuk starts with the next consecutive letter of the Aleph Bais, the pasuk beginning with Nun is omitted. This is because a pasuk with “Nun” speaks of the downfall of Klal Yisroel. “Nafla Lo Sosif Kum Besulas Yisroel”. Even though Dovid left out the Nun he still supported it with Ruach HaKodesh, as the pasuk after the missing Nun that starts with the letter Samech says, “Someich Hashem L’Chol HaNoflim”; Hashem supports all those who have fallen.

This, says the Bnei Yisaschar, is the significance of the word and month “Nissan”. It is the month that Hashem lifts up his downtrodden nation, both in the time of Galus Mitzrayim and also in the day of Moshiach Sheyavo Bimheira Biyameinu.

The Rebbe Maharash innovated the concept of "L'chatchila ariber".  The approach of l'chatchila ariber teaches that if we come upon an obstacle to a task we are involved in, or an obstacle to a mitzva or project or good deed which comes our way (or we pursue), we should overcome the obstacle in the most direct manner. 

The Rebbe Maharash explained that while some people propose that when confronted with an obstacle the best route is to go around, or under it -- but the Rebbe Maharash says: "And I say one has to go l'chatchila ariber [from the start, go over it]."

Send Me An Angel

An Angel is a messenger - "malach" in Hebrew. An Angel has no free will, they are intermediaries between G-d and the world.... so there is no point "praying" to an angel as advised by some "spiritual" sites. We pray to G-d and only G-d.

There are good and bad angels. The Satan is the worst of all.

Angels can come to earth when sent on a mission. As angels are only made of the elements of air and fire, it is very difficult for an angel to come to earth, they have to concentrate very hard, to focus themselves here. That is why they vanish suddenly when their mission is complete.

Sometimes only one person will see the angel..... sometimes many will see it. You will not realise it is an angel, it may have taken the form of a human in order to carry out its task. Often people are given tests by angels, appearing as beggars, asking for money or help.

The angels such as those who spoke to Abraham and Jacob were purely spiritual forces which appeared in human form.

Before a baby is born, an angel teaches the baby Torah in the womb:

The Talmud says :

A candle is lit on his head and he is able to see from one end of the world until the other end .... There isn't a better period for a person than these days [in the womb] ... They [the angels] teach him all of Torah ... and as he enters the world, an angel hits him on his mouth and he forgets it [to be recalled later throughout the course of his life through learning]. [Niddah 30b]

For every mitzvah (or good deed) a person does, an angel is created. This angel defends you in the Heavenly Court. And when we sin, or tell lies, or harm others.... we create for ourselves a prosecuting angel.

According to Maimonides, the degree of Divine Providence you experience is directly proportional to your attachment to God, and therefore the commandments which create that attachment are the true "guardian angels" of a person.

Rebbe Meir says: "If a person does one commandment, he is given one angel to guard over him; if he does many commandments, he is given many angels."

The angels that accompany us, watching over us, are our own, the ones we have created with each commandment we do. We might imagine that when we leave this world we'll be accompanied by millions of angels, but our Sages teach us otherwise. We are told that the quality of the angel depends on the quality of our mitzvah. It's a long way to the World to Come, and sometimes a person can arrive there with only one angel because all the others fell by the wayside, too weak to complete the journey. In order to create a powerful angel, we have to do each commandment "like fire," in Hebrew, K'AiSh, K = Kavanah (intent), A = Ahavah (love), and S = Simchah (joy), with deep intent, love, and joy.

Everything is by Divine Providence. If a leaf is turned over by a breeze, it is only because this has been specifically ordained by G-d to serve a particular function within the purpose of creation. [Ba'al Shem Tov]

The Talmud teaches that in many matters G-d controls the world through intermediaries (angels). In fact, the Talmud states that there are only three keys that G-d didn’t give over to intermediaries. They are: the Key of Rain (parnosa/sustenance), the Key of Childbirth, and the Key of Techias HaMaisim (the Revival of the Dead).

Yarzheit 21 Adar: The Rebbe of Rebbes

"Today, in our bitter exile, there are people who receive ruach hakodesh more easily than in the time of the prophets." [Noam Elimelech]

Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk [known as "The Rebbe of Rebbes"]  was the student of Dov Ber of Mezerich, the brother of Meshulam Zushia of Anipoli. He was born in 1717, and died on 21 Adar in 1786  [ this year - 10 March]

During the lifetime of Dov Ber of Mezerich he traveled widely with his brother all over Poland to spread Hassidism. After Dov Ber's death, Rebbe Elimelech settled in Lizhensk and attained great fame, thanks to his lofty life. During his lifetime, Lizhensk was turned into a center of Polish-Galician Hassidism. There, many famous Tzadikim and Hassidic activists of Galicia were educated and obtained their inspiration during the 18th century.

Rebbe Elimelech is the author of “Noam Elimelech” [Lvov 1798], a book of commentaries on the Pentateuch. In that book, the role of a Tzadik is set out and explained, and the doctrine of Hassidism is explained in greater detail. This book was subject to an intense investigation by the opponents of Hassidism. Many of his expositions are published in his work “Darche Tzedek”, and other works.

The Melitzer Rebbe shlit'a, a direct descendant of the "Noam Elimelech", stated that Rebbe Yisroel of Ruzhin said that 500 years before Rebbe Elimelech was born, the world received abundance in his merit. Now, after his death, even more so!

It is said that Rabbi Elimelech promised anyone who would visit his grave that they would not leave this world without teshuva.

After Rebbe Elimelech passed away, Rebbe Reb Zisha of Hanipoli was approached by his brother’s students to be their new leader. Rabbi Zisha declined and explained his reason with a parable. “The possuk in Bereshis 2:10 states “And a river went forth from Eden to water the garden and from there it split into four paths.”

The Torah is eternal and alludes to all events above and below for all generations. Eden alludes to our holy master the Baal Shem Tov. The river was his student the holy Mezitcher Maggid. The garden refers to my brother the Rebbe Elimelech.

This then is the meaning: a river flows from Eden to water the garden, the Torah flows as water from the Baal Shem Tov by way of the Mezritcher Maggid to the Rebbe Elimelech. From there it separates into four paths: they are :

1.The Holy Rebbe the Chozeh or Seer of Lublin;

2.The Holy Rebbe Avodas Yisrael the Koznitzer Maggid;

3. The Holy Rebbe Mendel Rimanover; and

4.The Holy Ohev Yisrael the Apta Rav.

The Light of The Rebbe’s Prayer Sash

Rebbe Elimelech had a custom that after the afternoon Mincha service he would converse with his close followers. He would then proceed to a special private room to pray the evening Maariv service alone in seclusion, purity and sanctity.

Rabbi Naftali Ropshitzer, a student of the Rebbe always yearned to also be in that room. He constantly wished to see the deeds of his Rebbe and how he prayed at that time. Once he stole into the room unnoticed and hid beneath the bed. The holy Rebbe entered and closed the door behind him. He took his “gartel,” the traditional sash or belt used by Hassidim for prayer and preceded to fasten it about himself.

The first time he wound the sash about his waist the whole house was filled with an awesome unbelievable light. The second time he tied the gartel winding it around, the light grew in intensity until the Ropshitzer could no longer endure it. He grew weak and found himself fainting. He called out in a loud voice.

Rebbe Elimelech heard the cries of distress coming from his student and recognized their source. “Naftali my son are you here?” the Rebbe asked. “Fortunately, you did not remain here for the third and final time I wound the gartel. If you had remained your soul would have surely left your body from the intensity of the great light. Therefore leave now.”

An unusual guest for Tea

The author of the Hasidic work Maor va’Shemesh was a student of the Rebbe Elimelech. Once he asked the Rebbe Elimelech to be allowed to serve him, thereby learning directly from his Rebbe. Rebbe Elimelech conceded and asked him for a cup of tea. After preparing the tea, the student entered the room to give it to the Rebbe. Inside he saw the awesome figure of an old man sitting beside Rebbe Elimelech. He was overcome by fear, trembling and shaking so much so that he dropped the cup spilling the tea on the floor and ran out.

Later Rebbe Elimelech saw his student and asked him why he hadn’t given him the tea he requested. He answered that he had brought it but when he saw the figure of the old man he was so frightened he spilled the tea. The Rebbe then said to him in Yiddish “Oy vey iz das kind voos ken nisht kiken dem taten in poonim arayn: Woe is to the child who cannot look his own father in the face.” That old man you saw was none other than our forefather Avraham peace be upon him!

Who Will Build the Third Temple - Man or G-d?

A Building of the Heavens or of the Earth 

There is a classic difference of opinion between our Rabbis regarding the construction of the Third Beis HaMikdash. The Rambam states [1] that the Beis HaMikdash will be built by man, more specifically by Mashiach. Indeed, its construction will be one of the signs of Mashiach’s advent.

Rashi, [2] by contrast, explains that the Beis HaMikdash has al­ready been constructed by G‑d and exists in the Heavenly realms, waiting for the time when it will descend to the earth. For the Third Beis HaMikdash will be “the Sanctuary of G‑d, established by Your hands.” [3] When the setting within the world is appropriate, this Heavenly structure will descend and become an actual reality within our material world.

Each of these views is based upon sources in the works of our Sages. [4] There is, however, a unique historical point which supports the Rambam’s position. Our Sages relate [5] that in the era of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananiah, the Romans granted the Jews permission to rebuild the Beis HaMikdash. Joyous at the opportunity they were granted, our people rushed to begin the preparations for building only to have the project thwarted by the intervention of the Samaritans. What is significant, however, is that they planned to build the Beis HaMikdash through their own efforts; they did not wait for it to descend from the heavens.

Will We Be Worthy?

This account can, however, be reconciled with Rashi’s view. To explain: Our Sages [6] note the apparent contradiction between two verses describing the coming of Mashiach. One verse states:[7] “Behold, one like a son of man came on the clouds of heaven.” It is, however, also written: [8] “Your king will come... like a poor man riding on a donkey.” In resolution, our Sages explain that if the Jews are found worthy, Mashiach will come “on the clouds of heaven”; if they do not merit, he will come “like a poor man riding on a donkey.” Similarly, in other contexts, our Sages de­scribe one course for the Redemption if the Jews’ conduct is meritorious, and another, if, heaven forbid, such merits are lacking. [9]

In the present context as well, it can be explained that the ultimate conception of the Beis HaMikdash is a Heavenly struc­ture to descend from above. If, however, the Jews are not wor­thy of such a sanctuary, the Beis HaMikdash will still return in the Era of the Redemption. It will, however, be a structure built by man, and not by G‑d.

On this basis, we can also resolve the difficulty cited above. When the Romans granted the Jews the opportunity to rebuild the Beis HaMikdash, the people must have been somewhat dis­appointed that the Beis HaMikdash did not descend from heaven. Nevertheless, the realization that they had not been found worthy of a heavenly structure did not dampen their en­thusiasm for building a sanctuary to the fullest extent of their human potential. [10]

Concrete Elucidation of Yechezkel’s Prophecies

Another possible resolution can be offered based on the Rambam’s statements shortly after the beginning of Hilchos Beis HaBechirah: [11]

The structure which Shlomo built is already described in the [Book of] Melachim. Similarly, the structure which will be constructed in the future era [is described in the Book of] Yechezkel. Nevertheless, the description there is not explained or elucidated.

[Therefore,] the people who constructed the Second [Beis HaMikdash] in the time of Ezra, built it according to the [basic] design [employed by] Shlomo, incorporat­ing the elements which were explicitly detailed by Yechezkel.

It can be explained that Mashiach will lead the people in the construction of those dimensions of the Beis HaMikdash which can be grasped by human intellect. Afterwards, since the dimensions of Yechezkel’s prophecies which we cannot com­pre­hend will be left incomplete, they will be revealed from Heaven by G‑d.

When That Which is Hidden Will Emerge

Another approach to rec­oncile Rashi’s view and that of the Rambam is based on our Sages’ interpretation of the verse, “Her gates sank in the earth.” [12] Our Sages relate [13] that the gates of the Beis HaMikdash were fashioned at the order of King David. This endowed them with an eternal invulnerability. [14] When the Babylonians laid waste to the Beis HaMikdash, the gates were not destroyed. In­stead, they were swallowed by the earth.

In the Era of the Redemption, the entire Beis HaMikdash will descend from the heavens with the exception of the gates, which will ascend from the earth. Mashiach will then connect the gates to the Beis HaMikdash. Our Sages explain [15] that con­necting the gates to a building is considered as equivalent to the construction of the entire edifice.

Adding Divine Perfection to Human Effort

Moreover, it can be ex­plained that the two concep­tions are, in no way, contradic­tory. Building the Beis HaMik­dash is a mitzvah incumbent on the Jewish people. [16] In the Era of the Redemption, when it will become possible to fulfill all the mitz­vos, we will also be obli­gated to rebuild the Beis HaMik­dash. Within that structure which man will erect, however, will descend and be enclothed “the Sanctuary of G‑d,” which is waiting in the heavens.

Mankind is obligated to create a Sanctuary for G‑d within the context of our material world. After that is completed to the fullest extent of our human potential, the inner essence of the Beis HaMikdash will be revealed — that it is “the Sanctuary of G‑d,” possessing a dimension of perfection which utterly sur­passes any possible work of mortal man.

May we witness the actual resolution of this issue in the immediate future, with the coming of the Redemption and the rebuilding — or the descent — of the Beis HaMikdash. “And then, the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to G‑d, as in the days of old and as in bygone years.”[17]

This year we have the Megillat Esther Code 5786 which you can see here.

And every year we have this famous code.

There is a famous "code" in Megillat Esther :- towards the end of the story, King Ahashveirosh allows the Jews to avenge themselves of their enemies on the 13th day of Adar. In Shushan, the capital, the Jews kill 500 men and hang Haman's ten sons on a gallows. Queen Esther then approaches the King with an additional request: "...allow the Jews who are in Shushan to do tomorrow as they did today, and let the ten sons of Haman be hanged on the gallows" [Esther 9:13]. It's curious that she would request the hanging of Haman's already slain sons. Nevertheless, the King complies.

The Hebrew word for "tomorrow" ["machar"] occasionally refers to the distant future [which is NOW... Devorah] Further, the Sages tell us that whenever the word "king" appears in the Megillah it alludes to the King of kings as well. Thus, the verse could be understood as a request by Esther to G-d to again hang the ten sons of Haman at some point in the distant future. Now, when the Megillah lists the ten sons of Haman during their hanging [Esther 9:7-9] there are a number of unusually-sized letters. [There is a tradition to write certain letters in the Torah larger or smaller than the standard size.]

According to the most accepted tradition, there is a large 'vav' [numerical value = 6] and a small 'tav' [400], 'shin' [300] and 'zayin' [7]. The following suggestion has been made: The large vav refers to the sixth millennium [of the Hebrew calendar]; the small letters refer to year 707 of that millennium. The meaning, then, is that G-d agreed to hang Haman's ten sons again in the year 5707 = 1946-7.

When listing the ten sons of Haman who were hanged [Esther 9:6-10], three letters, namely Taf, Shin, and Zayin, are written smaller than the rest [most printed texts reflect this; if yours doesn’t, look in another]. The commentaries offer no explanation for this other than that it is a prophecy. The letters "Taf-Shin-Zayin" represent the Hebrew year 5707, corresponding to the secular year 1946-47.

On October 16, 1946 (21 Tishrei, 5707) ten convicted Nazi war criminals were hanged in Nuremberg. (An eleventh, Hermann Goering, a transvestite, committed suicide in his cell. The Midrash tells us that Haman also had a daughter who committed suicide.) As if the parallel were not obvious enough without further corroboration, Nazi Julius Streicher’s last words were: "PURIM FEST 1946!". [In case you question the accuracy of Streicher’s last words, they are are well-documented; they appeared in Newsweek, October 28, 1946]

It is fairly safe to assume that (a) Streicher did not know about the three small letters in the Megilla, (b) he did not know that these letters corresponded to the year in which he was being hanged, and (c) even had he known, he would have had no motivation to reinforce the validity of Jewish texts, traditions, or prophecies. One could not ask for a more independent confirmation of the all encompassing knowledge to be found in the Sifrei Tanach.

Rabbi Weissmandl - a great Hungararian scholar and holocaust survivor - made a number of findings concerning Megillat Esther using skip distances of 12,111 letters - the exact number of letters in Megillat Esther. If one starts with the first regular mem [as opposed to the "final mem"] in Bereishis 4:14, where the name Esther [vocalized differently] appears for the only time in the Torah, and count at intervals of 12,111 letters, one finds spelled out the phrase "Megillat Esther." Coincidence? I think not.

Shabbat Zachor

 

On the Shabbat before Purim, the holiday on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's plot to destroy the Jewish people, the weekly Torah reading is supplemented with the Zachor ("Remember!") reading [Devarim 25:17-19] in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek and to eradicate it from the face of the earth. 

When the Israelites left Egypt, no nation dared pick a fight with them. Who would start up with a people whose G‑d just smacked around the mighty Egypt with ten awesome plagues, and drowned the surviving few in the sea? Only Amalek, driven by profound hatred which defied logic, came to wage battle. 

According to many Halachic authorities, there is a Biblical requirement for all men to hear the special Zachor reading. 

The special Zachor haftorah [I Samuel 15:2-34] discusses G‑d's command to King Saul to destroy the people of Amalek. 

"Parshat Zachor" is the second of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being Shekalim, Parah and Hachodesh).

Haman took the robes and the horse and dressed Mordecai. He led him on horseback through the main boulevard of the city and called before him, "Thus shall be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor." [Esther 6:11]

Seeing that he had no choice, Haman went to the royal storehouse, depressed and defeated. He was in a state of shock and could hardly walk. He took the king's coronation robes and placed them on his shoulder. Then he went to the royal stables and got the king's first horse. Trembling, he went to Mordecai. 

Mordecai had his head covered with his tallith, and he was reciting the Sh'ma and the morning prayers. As he finished he saw Haman approaching, and seeing the horse, assumed that he was coming to kill him. 

Haman could barely open his lips. "Mordecai. Come. G-d always does miracles for you. I planned evil for you, but I am suffering for it. Rise and let me dress you with these royal robes. Get up on the king's horse. The king gave me orders and I dare not disobey." 

"Where's your respect?" replied Mordecai. "Don't you see that I'm wearing sackcloth and ashes? Should I put on the king's robes without first bathing? Don't you have any respect for the king? Before I put on the royal robes, I'll have to have a bath and a haircut. I have been fasting for three days and nights, and I have very little strength." 

Esther had heard that Mordecai was to be paraded through the city and honored for saving the king's life. She issued orders that all stores and businesses should be closed so that everyone could witness the parade. When Haman tried to find a bathhouse and barber shop, none were open. Finally, Haman had no other choice but to heat water and draw a bath for Mordecai. 

Haman went to find a barber to cut Mordecai's hair but he could not find one. They had all closed their shops and were waiting for the big parade. Not having any other choice he cut Mordecai's hair. 

The haircut was finished, Haman dressed Mordecai in the royal robes and placed the crown on his head. "Come mount the horse, " said Haman. 

"I can't," replied Mordecai. "I am too weak from my long fast." Haman was desperate. He had to follow the king's orders. "Come mount the horse. I'll bow down and you can climb up on me." 

Very fitting, thought Mordecai. A fulfillment of the verse, "Your enemies shall shrink before you, and you shall step on their highest ones" [Deuteronomy 33:29]. 

Mordecai mounted the horse and began to praise G-d. "I will praise you, O my G-d, for you have lifted me up, and have not allowed my enemies to make merry with me." 

Twenty-seven thousand men carrying gold cups and pillows marched before Mordecai, all chanting, "Thus shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor." All the Jewish men followed Mordecai, overflowing with happiness. Jewish women who could not leave home watched from the windows and took up the chant, "Thus shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor." 

Esther stepped forward to greet Mordecai. Seeing him riding the royal horse and wearing the robes of state, she offered thanks to G-d. She said to Mordecai, "It is a fulfillment of the verse, 'G-d lifts the impoverished from the dust; from the dung-heap, He raises the hopeless' [Psalms 113:7]. Because of your sackcloth and ashes, G-d raised you up in this manner." 

The Seventh of Adar

"And you will command the Children of Israel" [Tetzaveh 27:20]

The Vilna Gaon asks why the verse begins with Hashem instructing Moshe "And you will command..." without first stating the standard opening "Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying..."

The answer, said the Gaon, is as follows:

The day of Moshe Rabbeinu's passing [and day of his birth] was the seventh of Adar. In most years, this day falls out during the week in which Parshas Tetzaveh is read. Now, in the entire Parshas Tetzaveh, Moshe's name is not mentioned, even once. This alludes to the fact that Moshe's demise took place during this week.

However, continued the Gaon, even though Moshe's name is not mentioned explicitly in Tetzaveh, it is nevertheless there in a hint:

There are 101 verses in the Parsha. If the letters that comprise the name "Moshe" - משׁה -are spelled out in their entirety, we would have the following:

מ the letters comprising Mem are מ מ -

שׁ the letters comprising Shin are שׁ י ן -

ה the letters compring Hey are ה א -

Total numerical value: 446

If we add up the numerical value of all these letters, and then subtract the numerical value of משׁה [Moshe: 345] - we will be left with the number 101 - the exact number of verses in the parsha.

Favoritism in Heaven is Acquired Down Here

Going about our daily life, we encounter many different sorts of people. There are the successful ones and the ones who constantly fail; those who are energetic and those who take life easy. There are people who are greatly respected and those who are less valued. There are also people who have 'connections' - children of important personalities or famous askanim; they are the ones who can resolve almost any predicament, with minimum time and effort…

This latter group is in a special category; everything falls into place for them almost by itself - they find work easily, they have friends in all the right places, they are accepted in the best educational institutions, and in the Beit Haknesset too they are accorded all the honors. The cherry on the cake is that when they need to deal with an issue in a government office, or sort out a problem with the local council they enjoy special treatment; lengthy procedures are carried out with alacrity and in a most efficient manner and they also receive all kinds of benefits…

But in heaven, Rabbi Osher Kovlesky shlita enlightens us, there is no such thing. All people are considered equal and are judged according to their deeds alone. Benefits are bestowed on those who have earned the merit. But there is nevertheless one group, a special 'elite' group, whose members do enjoy special reprieve in heaven. They are dealt with lightly, processes are shortened for them, they are assisted in closing their case, and their sins are bypassed. They automatically merit lenient treatment, not down in this world but in heaven – the place where it matters the most…

How does one join this club? It is open to one and all. One's country of origin makes no difference, nor does one's financial status. Those who enjoy special benefits in heaven, those who merit efficient service in the most valuable place - are those who give in to others, those who show submission. They behave with restraint, know how to defer to others and to be flexible and they know how to yield even when they truly deserve something.

Chazal have revealed a wonderful concept: "המעביר על מידותיו" – one who yields and doesn’t take a stand over offenses that were done to him, "he is forgiven for all his sins" – he merits heavenly assistance to fully repent. His repentance is given priority, he is treated with reprieve when seeking to erase debts and sins, and the focus is on judging his merits.

But one moment, how can this be? In heaven, nothing is overlooked. Heaven reckons every word that comes out of our mouths and every sight that we gaze at; a careful note of our every deed is recorded, "for all these things G-d will call you to account" [Kohelet 11:9]?

This is certainly correct - if we too behave according to the strict law and we are most particular about everything that others do to us! But, if we know how to yield and we are prepared to behave beyond the strict letter of the law, then in heaven we will merit the same attitude: we will be rewarded with abundant merits which will glide over our sins.

In this parsha we are told about the garments of the kohanim, the special clothing that Ahron and his sons wore. Aharon HaKohen "loved peace and pursued peace". This was his essence. He was a person who exuded peace and went out of his way to make peace between others and to increase peace and brotherhood. One of the most effective tools for increasing peace and friendship is to adopt the trait of giving way, to forgo and forfeit. We should firmly resolve that we are prepared to flee from all strife and peace is our priority, even if this means forgoing in any way.

The next time someone takes our place in the line, or takes advantage of us in any way for example by blocking our air or light, or parking in our private space – we can be right and make sure that he doesn’t get away with it, but it is much more worth it to be clever - to surrender and show restraint, to move on. At that moment we may seem weak in other people's eyes, but right then all our books of debt will be opened in Heaven, and entire pages will be deleted without batting an eyelash. We will merit special benefits and alleviations, which will cause our repentance to be accepted willingly and with ease. It could be that the person will again park in your space, and it is totally correct that someone insulted you so deeply that there is no way you are going to help him, and maybe the neighbor's extension blocks your light – but it is so much more worth it to merit a stream of benefits in heaven! To forgo and receive preferential treatment in the place where life itself is determined, is of much greater worth!

When Will Moshiach Arrive ?

When studying the Bible we find that prophecy begins to wane during the Second Temple times, and that by the time the Second Temple was destroyed, prophecy has largely ceased to exist. The Gemara on today’s daf discusses what became of nevuah – of prophecy. 

Rabbi Yochanan taught that from the time the Temple was destroyed, nevuah was taken from the prophets and given to shotim and tinokot – to fools and to small children. 

This difficult statement has been the center of much debate and discussion among the commentaries.

The Maharsha rejects the notion that true prophecy has been given to these kinds of people. The concept of prophecy – of the ability to receive the word of God – must be given to those people who are on a high spiritual and intellectual level. He suggests that we are not discussing true nevuah here, rather a lower level of foreknowledge that comes through a supernatural force, but not through a real relationship with God. 

The Iyun Yaakov suggests that the lack of nevuah after the destruction of the Temple is a consequence of the fact that en nevuah shorah ela mitokh simcha – that prophecy can only take place in a setting of joy – and after the destruction of the Temple, people with high levels of intellectual and spiritual sensitivity cannot reach a level of joy that would allow them to connect with the Almighty. Specifically because of their lack of sensitivity, fools and children may occasionally undergo a prophetic experience.

The Maharal explains that there is a constant barrage of prophetic waves that emanate from on high that are beyond the comprehension of people with normal intellect. Ordinarily, only select individuals – nevi’im – are able to tap into these waves and still retain their sanity, while ordinary people cannot receive these waves because of their source, which is beyond comprehension. It is specifically those individuals whose intellect does not stand in the way of their comprehension – like children and fools – who can occasionally receive these messages.

The Month of Adar and the Clarification of Esau

The root Adar appears five times in the Torah. The rule is that the first appearance of a root in the Torah is the most important and expressive of all. The first appearance of the root “Adar” in the Torah is in Genesis 25:25, refers to the birth of Esau: “And the first one emerged ruddy, completely like a cape of hair (Aderet [root of Adar] se’ar), and they called his name Esau.” This is the root of Adar in the Torah, aderet se’ar. The Torah refers to only two people as red-complexioned: Esau and King David. From this we learn that King David, the King Mashiach, comes to rectify the red-complexioned Esau. 

In Hebrew, the word for “red” is adom, cognate to Adam. There is something red in the essence of man. Adam is also cognate to adamah (earth). Apparently, the archetypical earth is red clay. The word admoni (אדמוני) used to describe the red-complexioned Esau has the numerical value of 111, which is the same numerical value as the word פלא (wonder) and אפל (dark). In the personality of man, we have an illuminated side and a dark side. (This is the secret of “according to the will of איש ואיש(this man and that man)” in the Scroll of Esther. In the redemption, the verse “איש ואיש (this man and that man) will be born in it”[1] will be fulfilled. The average value of איש ואיש is Mordechai Hayehudi (the hero – along with Queen Esther) of the Scroll of Esther. His illuminated side is white, while the dark side is red. There is something red in the dark side. 

Every person has their Jacob and their Esau, who are also their Mordechai and Haman. The illuminated side is Jacob and Mordechai. The dark side is full of potential. Who sensed Esau’s potential? His father, Isaac. Hence “And Isaac loved Esau, for “there was hunting in his mouth.”[2] Esau hunted him with his words. In the Torah portion of Mishpatim it says, “And he did not hunt, and God brought it to his hand and I will appoint for you a place to where he can flee.”[3] Rashi on this verse provides us with a lengthy analysis of the root of the word צדה (hunt) and concludes that the meaning is like an ambush. Apparently, each of the sides of a person’s personality – the illuminated side and the dark side – lie in ambush for each other. 

Esau is full of potential. It is impossible to bring the redemption without him. The Lubavitcher Rebbe said that in our generation, Esau is ready – the dark side is ready for “the advantage of light over darkness.” In potential, he has more light than the original light. 

Why is the month of Adar connected to the dark side? First, Haman was happy that the lot fell on the month of Adar. The sages say that he was happy because he knew that Moses had died in the month of Adar. In general, though, there is something about Adar that is a dark month, the month of Esau, who was born like an aderet (Adar) cape of hair. 

The holiday of the month of Adar is Purim, the month in which everything is transformed. On Purim we eat and drink until we don’t know the difference between “cursed is Haman” (the dark side) and “blessed is Mordechai” (the illuminated side). On Purim, we have to reach a state in which we cannot differentiate between the dark side and the illuminated side, a state in which all seems the same; one simple unified state. 

The first appearance of Adar in the Torah in connection with a garment (cape) shows the connection of this month to garments and the world of garments. It is customary to wear a costume on Purim. This Purim, we can wear the cape of Esau and transform it into the cape of Elijah the Prophet. Esau means “completed” and indeed, Esau was born completed. The time has come for us to complete the clarification of Esau. The Lubavitcher Rebbe said that we have already completed the service of clarification. Everything is finished, everything is Esau (completed).
