BDE : Erlauer Rebbe zt''l

A very special soul has passed from this world.

''B’tzaar Ra’av we regret to report the passing of the Erlauer Rebbe, Harav Yochonon Sofer zt”l. He was 92 years old.

Harav Yochanan Sofer, the Erlau Rebbe, was born in Erlau, Hungary, in Teves 5683/1923. His father, Harav Moshe Sofer, great-grandson and namesake of the Chasam Sofer, zt”l, was the son of the Rav of Erlau, Harav Shimon Sofer, known for his sefer Hisorerus Teshuvah.

In his later years, Harav Shimon appointed his son, Harav Moshe, to serve as Rav of Erlau alongside him.''

Baruch Dayan HaEmes
He was from a very illustrious family. We all know about the Chasam Sofer zt"l
It feels like a historical link has been broken.

"The Rebbe’s second son, Harav Yaakov Sofer, Rav of Erlau in Beitar Illit, spoke next. He noted that the Rebbe was niftar in the week of the parashah of Ki Sisa. The parashah begins with the words, “Ki sisa es rosh Bnei Yisrael,” and the words “rosh Bnei Yisrael” are the roshei teivos of the word Rebbe, alluding to the lifting of the Rebbe to higher plains."

"Harav Zalman Dovid Yeshayah Sofer, Rav of the Erlau community in Boro Park, noted that the petirah of tzaddikim is a kapparah for all of Klal Yisrael. It is like a korban on behalf of the klal. “May the Rebbe’s petirah be a kapparah and may he be a meilitz yosher for all of us,” concluded Harav Zalman."

The Erlau Rebbe zt"l was avery, very unique person.
Rabbi Yisrael Lau, former chief Rabbi of Israel, noted that he was a great Talmid Chacham:
he was a Ra.M, ie Magid Shiur (for higher learning); he was Rav. Many people would seek his advice be it personal or public/political matters. Above all, he was a very, very humble person who exuded a tremendous Ahavat Yisrael to all, no matter what 'stirpe'. Yet he would firmly hold onto to his priciples of Daas Tora, not yielding even 'an inch' away from Torah-hashkafa, following in the footsteps of his illustrious fore-bearers.

Yehi Zichro Baruch! May his cherished memory be a blessing for us all.

And may he intercede by the heavenly Throne of Gloly that MOSHIACH sould come SWIFTLY ! ! !

Thank you, Devorah, for telling us about this great Tzaddik who, during his life-time shunned

the lime-light.

Just hours after the levaya for the Erlau Rebbe ZT”L, a great grandson was born. The newborn is a grandson to the rebbe’s son HaRav Yaakov Sofer and a son to rebbe’s grandson Rav Moshe Sofer and son-in-law to HaGaon HaRav Yosef Tzeller, Rosh Yeshivas Sadigura and son-in-law to the Ashlag Rebbe Shlita. One assumes at the bris the boy will be named after the great grandfather ZT”L. YWN
