Poverty and Scarcity

Green beans $39.99 a kilo. See News for more on this

How are the prices near you?  The reason for the high price of the beans is the scarcity of them due to our recent floods.  But that's just one example of what is happening around the world, for various reasons including the war in Ukraine.

Text by Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet

The time appointed by G-d for the Messianic redemption is a closely guarded secret.1 Nonetheless, we are offered many hints to recognize its proximity: when certain conditions come about, await the imminent coming of Mashiach.

Most of these conditions are quite disturbing, clearly displaying a situation of the very “bottom of the pit.”2 One major source describes the world-condition in those days as follows: increase in insolence and impudence; oppressing inflation; unbridled irresponsibility on the part of authorities; centers of learning will turn into bawdy houses; wars; many destitutes begging, with none to pity them; wisdom shall be putrid; the pious shall be despised; truth will be abandoned; the young will insult the old; family-breakup with mutual recriminations; impudent leadership.3

Other sources add: lack of scholars; succession of troubles and evil decrees; famines; mutual denunciations; epidemics of terrible diseases; poverty and scarcity; cursing and blaspheming; international confrontations nations provoking and fighting each other.4 In short, it will be a time of suffering that will make it look as if G-d were asleep. These are the birthpangs of Mashiach, bearable only in anticipation of the bliss that follows them.

“When you see a generation ever dwindling, hope for him… when you see a generation overwhelmed by many troubles as by a river, await him.”5 “When you see nations fighting each other, look toward the feet of Mashiach.”6

Little wonder that some sages expressed apprehensions about those days in terms of, “Let [Mashiach] come, but let me not see him.”7 The prevailing attitude, however, is to await his coming in spite of all, even if thereafter we shall merit no more than sitting “in the shadow of his donkey’s dung!”8

The troubles and agony of chevlei Mashiach (birthpangs of Mashiach), however, are not unavoidable:

“What is man to do to be spared the pangs of Mashiach? Let him engage in Torah and acts of loving-kindness!”9

Moreover, there are also good and happy signs indicating the imminent coming of Mashiach: a good measure of prosperity;10 a renewal of Torah-study;11 and opening of the “gates of wisdom above and the wellsprings of wisdom below,”12 evidenced also by scientific and technological discoveries and advances; a manifestation and propagation of the mystical teachings of the Torah;13 and also “In the time that Mashiach will awaken, many signs and miracles will occur in the world.”14

There were many times in history that we had inflation and similar events, and yet, Moshiach did not arrive.

Devorah said...

Yes Shlomo, but in those times we didn't have all the other conditions mentioned as well.
We have all of them now.

This generation has the least poverty compared to previous ones. We also don’t know what “look towards the feet of Moshiach means”. That could mean 100 years? 20 years? 1 year? This year?

Devorah said...

Wait a few weeks/months and then tell me about the poverty situation.

There is a cut off point for Moshiach's arrival. The year 6000 minus the 210 years of wandering in the desert which we are given as a credit, and the resurrection of the dead, which occurs in stages based on the dead person's holiness, and therefore Moshiach's arrival must take place soon in order to fit into the time schedule.

Rabbi Mendel Kessin has spoken about this many times, and I will look for more detailed information on the internet, but there is no way we have to wait another 100 years or even 20 years. We are very close.

Chava: see here Israel, Russia, Ukraine..... Angels and Moshiach

"The Gemara explains that the world will last 6,000 years because each millennium (in our time-frame) is equivalent to one day in G-D’s. It says that “a thousand years in our eyes is equivalent to one day in Yours.” The world was created in six days so, therefore, the world will last 6,000 years which is G-D’s “day” equivalent to a thousand days (for us). In the 7,000th year, which is equivalent to Shabbos, is the world ends. That’s equivalent to the Gregorian calendar year, 2240. After that, the world begins the process of transformation into the Future World. Everybody in the Gemara says several times that the world will only last 6000 years, equivalent to the six days of Creation. The Zohar presents--and this is the argument--that resurrection begins 210 versus 214.

According to the one who says it will take 214 years, we are going to see mashiach in four years. That’s why things are happening so quickly. It’s a tremendously accelerated process. That process begins after Mashiach ben David comes so, therefore, according to the less stringent conclusion--210 years--the Mashiach ben David comes by the year 2030 which is less than eight years. But, before Mashiach ben David, we must have the time period of Mashiach ben Yosef. I’ve spoken about that extensively. Therefore, we are very, very close because, as close as we are to Mashiach ben David, we have to have Mashiach ben Yosef first. That’s why all of this is happening with incredible speed. "

Why does Moshiach have to come the same year that Techiyas Hameisim starts (2030 or 2026)? Terrible to have to wait even another month for Moshiach. Who could wait until 2030 for Moshiach? OUCH.. that’s a painful wait

Devorah said...

Reuven: the point is we DON'T have to wait until 2026, we have ALL the conditions required now. Whilst I have been disappointed many times, I still believe we are nearly there. I am not alone with this opinion.
When did you or anyone else ever think that a man could become a woman and vice versa? That not only is it legal and acceptable, it is done to children as well. If our world is not ready for Moshiach..... then words fail me.

Whether ready or not, we certainly have reached the point of no return due to such a critical mass of people having become corrupted. If the NWO would have their way, we'd be headed to an Orwellian world in record time.

Thing is, one of the concepts I can't understand is that of "yeridat hadorot". Because frankly, I remember my parents' chevra. And for sure, most of them would not have been able to well-tolerate the abnormalities which so many of us are enduring nowadays. Their frustration threshholds would have been overwhelmed long ago. By that, I don't mean to lump-in Holocaust survivors who endured among the harsher experiences. For them, even today's abnormalities would be no-sweat in comparison.

Those dates are for techiyas hameisim, not Moshiach. The Zohar and Leshem say techiyas hameisim starts 210 or 214 years before olam habah (6000), so that means Moshiach has to come well before 2026/2030!

Thought by this time, most of the readers of this blog and the other wonderful blogs we have been blessed with at this time, would know that we are 'definitely' in the time of the birthpangs of Moshiach. Agree with Devorah, that it is between 210 and 214 years before the seventh millenium that techiyat hameisim has to take place. A very scholarly Rabbi was a guest on a podcast, his name is Rabbi Hool who calculate everything (even the 168 missing years) that there is the greatest possibility that MBY will be here by Tisha B'Av 2023 if G-D so deems it and the war of Gog u'Magog will take place in 2027. May it be so (or even earlier)! The remaining 200+ years before the 7th millenium (yr. 6000) will be pure 'bliss', so our Sages have foretold. May it be! Then we will know of nissim v'niflaot (miracles & wonders) ultimately leading us to the highest of spiritual levels and our deepest relationship with HashemYisbarach!

I have to believe we are close.

Whilst the world has known wars, inflation and even impudence of the youth for over 1000 years. There was Keitz (a likely time for Mashiach) during the lifetimes of Adam and Chava, and Moshe Rebbeinu, and the Ari Ha Kodesh. The conditions likely to bring Mashiach as detailed in Mishnah and Gemorah can apply to many times. But....if we look at the extraordinary events of the last 200 years...The Industrial Revolution and Chasidism, radio, film and television, two world wars, The Shoah, The Atomic bombs, The State of Israel, Space Flight, The internet and instant messaging, the Baal Teshuvah Movement....then surely we are close.

Why does the Zohar and Leshem stating techiyas hameisim will start before 210 or 214 years before 6000 mean that Moshiach won’t come before then? Moshiach Ben Dovid can come today and techiyas hameisim can start in 2026/2027 if it didn’t start sooner.

Something about this sign makes no sense. It’s in English and in dollars, which makes one assume it’s from the US. But the US sells produce by the pound, not by the kilo. Most Americans have no idea how much a kilo is.

Chaim: Moshiach will come first (most likely MBY) so he can clean house and rid the Land of its enemies and the building of the Beit Hamikdash will be started (maybe we start and H' sends down from Shamayim the completed one). All kinds of intepretations on that. The war of Gog U'Magog will then take place where H' takes care of our enemies within mere minutes. Let's pray that H' hastens the Geulah but with 'great kindness and mercy' for every Yiddishe neshama and the rightous of the world. Techiyat hameisim will start from that period of 210/214 years before 6000 and the first to rise will be our holy ancestors (i.e. Avraham, Yitzchak & Yaakov).

Anonymous at 3:09, you're very rude and I should have deleted you.
It's an Australian sign obviously. Yes we have kilos and grams here, not pounds and ounces. Google can help you understand the value of a kilo,
gimme a break.
