Following the antisemitic stabbing of two Jewish people on the streets of Golders Green this morning, words of condemnation are no longer sufficient. This must be a moment that demands meaningful action from every institution, every community, every leader, and every decent person in our country. This is a hatred that we must face down together.
I lived in Golders Green for a while.
ReplyDeleteDo Jewish organisations and shuls have security in the UK ?
Just curious about that.
In Sydney we have massive security outside every Jewish school, shul, and everything else. Costs a great deal of money, paid for by the Jewish community and subsidised by the Aust. government. Kids go to school and walk past armed security guards just to get in the building. It's been like that for over ten years here.
The Community Security Trust has operated since 1984 to protect the wider Jewish community and monitor incidents.
ReplyDeleteThe UK version of the Shomrim were also set up in 2008 to patrol London areas with notable populations of Hareidim such as Golders Green and Stamford Hill. (I guess they operate in Gateshead and some areas of Manchester as well.) But neither of these organisations is present outside every shul at all times. They are not armed groups, and are not allowed to be, though some members are trained in self defence.
The rules on weapons are very strict in the UK.
Legal gun ownership is minimal, and even a torch or pen used in self defence can be regarded as a lethal weapon if a policeman or lawyer wants to frame it as such.
Guns are legal here only with a "gun licence" - you need to have a valid reason for owning a gun, so obviously security guards can carry weapons if they are working as security. What a mess eveything is, but we knew it would be before Moshiach. So here we are.
