There was another Chanukah event where everyone was also traumatised. when the news got out, the Communal Security Group [volunteers] made the thousands of people at the second event lie on the ground and crawl to the back hill, where they had to roll down the steep hill to escape the venue. Fortunately the steep hill is all grass. Nevertheless, all of these families were deeply shocked and kids were hysterical with fear.

Following the devastating attack at Bondi Beach yesterday evening, the Alert Level for the Jewish Community in Australia has been raised to Level 6, ‘Critical’.
CSG NSW is implementing immediate closures of Jewish communal activities across NSW.
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and CSG NSW have established a Crisis Team. This team is working through immediate priorities and will inform and advise the community.
The current advice is to cease all communal activity. This includes, but is not limited to the operation of schools, synagogues, organisations, kosher restaurants & shops, excursions, services, visitor entry, events and any related activity.
As we navigate our way through this, we urge our community to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity to us immediately on 1300 000 CSG (274).
This attack has hit all Jews round the world. The timing on the first night of Hanukah especially. Once again Chabad have been attacked.
ReplyDeleteDevorah, is it common for an Australian citizen to be legally allowed to keep six guns, as we have been told the elder of the gunmen had in his home?
Is there much backstory revealed about the man who disarmed one attacker? He is called Ahmed Al Ahmed, which I would believe to be a Muslim name.
There are people permitted to have guns, they have a "gun licence". Many requirements need to be met. I don't know how this guy got a gun licence, sounds very suspicious to me.

People can apply for a legal gun licence, if they work in agriculture/farming, or security/police etc. Now they are tightening those laws as well, as this guy apparently had six legal fire-arms. However, it is illegal to carry a firearm in public, even if you have a gun licence, unless you are police or security.

The man who disarmed one of the Sydney attackers has been identified 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmad.
ReplyDeleteThe father of two, who’s identified as a Sutherland fruit shop owner, was evidently shot twice and had to undergo surgery, according to a cousin. One theory circulating on social media claimed the hero had never handled guns and didn’t fire on the Islamist because he was unaware of how to reload the Beretta bolt action rifle believed to have been used by the terrorist..

Thousands of people, all religions, have gathered outside the Bondi Pavilion at the beach, Rabbi Levi Wolff gave them a shiur and they all sat and listened ! They'll be lighting the Menorah soon, and Australians have been asked to light their own candle tonight, to bring more light.

There cannot be any levaya for the deceased because their bodies have not been released to the Chevra Kadisha. The families don't even know where the bodies are being kept.
ReplyDeleteIt is an ongoing nightmare for them, they cannot bury the murdered kedoshim.
There is nothing sinister here, this is general protocol, but for non Jews it is not as imperative to immediately bury the deceased as in Jewish tradition.
So there is a lot for the families to be dealing with at this time.
The Sydney Rabbonim are doing everything they can and are tirelessly working around the clock to get all the Kedoshim's bodies released as quickly as possible for immediate Kevurah (jewish burial). There are things being quietly done behind the scenes so to speak.

ReplyDeleteThis is what we call in Judaism Shmira (or Shemira) is the Jewish tradition of guarding/watching the body of a deceased person from death until burial, ensuring it's never alone as a sign of honor, dignity, and comfort for the hovering soul, typically done by volunteers (shomrim) in shifts, reciting Psalms (Tehillim) quietly in the vicinity, and is a deeply respected mitzvah (good deed) in Judaism.
The purpose of Shmira is to comfort the Neshama (Soul). Believed the soul stays near the body; the vigil comforts it during this transition.
Kavod HaMeis (Honor the Deceased): Shows respect for the body as a vessel for the soul, preventing it from being treated as useless.
Also amongst other reasons as well.
There is also around the clock Tehillim being said by most in our community for the injured who are still in hospital receiving treatment and care. May they have a speedy Refuah Shleimah.
