I am old enough to remember how men dressed when I was a kid -- Slacks with a white shirt, usually with the sleeves rolled up. If they were going somewhere more formal they wore a hat. If it was cold , an overcoat. Today when I see males above 20-something to 80 years old wearing shorts, tennis shoes and baseball cap just about everywhere I just shake my head. Boys used to wear short pants. A boy couldn't wait to wear long pants like the big boys. Now most men are happy to dress like boys .. and act like boys.
I love how you make your points, Devorah. Your blog is one of my favorites. The above cartoon is only too true.
Anonymous, your words are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, women are guilty of the same. We see so many grown women wearing trendy teeny-bopper clothes, using teen slang, and spending tons of money and time trying to look seventeen. What happened to wanting to look classy and dignified? Why are adults so afraid to look and behave with maturity and be taken seriously?
Tali: Don't get me started! ;-) The way women dress without grace or modesty, emulating the worst, the lowest in our society. They allow their pre-pubescent and teen daughters to dress like they're for sale. The behavior is not like a mother. They want to be their children's friend. Their kids have plenty of friends. They need a mother. If you want to ruin your child - be their "friend."
Orthodox women wouldn't be playing sport in front of males, so feasibly they could wear what they like.... although they'd probably cover up anyway. In a female-only gym, most of them would still be tznius.
The shock is that this cartoon portrays the absurdity of the truth. Yes, I dress modestly and I feel like such a woman and am proud of this. I rememebr a time when I dressed immodestly and see a huge difference in the respect that I recieve. Now,when I shop for clothes for my kids I am shocked and amazed to see seductive outfits (halters and the likes) for babies. Please dont get me started on the vilgarity of the social websites that allow for no real communication with people saying anything and everything that is on their mind.
Daniel, in my experience, long sleeves are never a hindrance, and a long skirt that is very wide is usually not a hindrance. For my own sense of comfort, I always wear a skirt, even when it's women only, but like Devorah said, women can wear pants or shorts if in a women-only area and it's really not a problem.
Even the biggest religious conservatives here in the USA have no problem with women wearing shorts or proper athletic attire when training or competing or with wearing jeans or pants and shorter sleeves in general as long as it's not flagrantly provocative. Never have I seen anyone play sports or run in a skirt. Should men wear suits and ties when running or playing sports? I even see Muslim women with the neck and head scarf wear jeans, and it does not look provocative to me at all.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

what about when playing sports or being athletic? Should women still have to wear long skirts and sleeves then?

Are all women not allowed to do this or just Jewish women?
I think Muslim women would also follow these guidelines... and some other religions.
