Terror in Paris

Friday night in Paris saw seven consecutive terror attacks across the city. More than 128 people have been killed and hundreds injured.
Lights off on the Eiffel Tower for the first time
since 1889.

The local Jewish community is waking up to hear the news of Friday's atrocities - many were observing the Shabbat until this morning and did not realise their neighbourhood had been targeted by the gunmen.  Read more here

It is exactly seven years since the Mumbai Massacre on Rosh Chodesh Kislev 5769.

France has declared a state of emergency, closed its borders and sent 1500 troops to Paris.

Chevlei Moshiach.

France = צרפת - gematria 770

In a sicha from 5752 (possibly Toldos) the Lubavitcher Rebbe points out that France - Tzarfat is gematria 770 - which is also equal to parazta - breaking out from all boundaries (I.e. in the spreading of the wellsprings of Chassidut)

In Chabad some of the French anthems (Napolean) are sang as Chassidic melodies now, as the Rebbeim elevated and converted these fallen sparks to holiness.

I trust that Hashem knows what He's doing, but it is still possible to maintain a human response in the face of this horrible attack. (Sorry, but "chevlei mashiach anyone?" was just a bit too flippant for my taste). We wouldn't like it if the goyim spoke like that about our dead.

At the same time, this is a massive wake-up call for French Jews to get out of France, pronto, post-haste, as of yesterday. Which bit of "France is no longer safe for you" are they not understanding? Nearly ten years ago, when Ilan Halimi was brutally tortured and murdered by Muslims (of course), I thought the French Jews would be shocked into leaving en masse, now I see that despite the ever increasing violence against the Jews, only a small trickle has left, i.e. compared to the size of the community that remains.

The Friday night attack may not have been targeted at the Jews specifically, but it shows what the enemy is capable of, and will Gd forbid do to the Jews at the first opportunity. I can only hope and pray that they will finally get the message, and leave en masse, all 500,000 of them.

" His father, Bernard, 66, said there is a difference between the attacks Friday night that killed 129 people and the January assault on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper and a Kosher supermarket that killed 17 victims.

He says in January "it was an attack on Jews, it was an attack on free expression."

This, he said, "was an attack on a way of life - they shot without discrimination." "

This is a case of "first they came for the communists..." The truth is it doesn't make any difference which way it starts: if it's against the general population, it will include the Jews, and if it starts against the Jews, it will spread to the general population.

Bascially the man above is saying that he didn't care when the war was only against the Jews and the principle of free speech. Now that it is against his way of life, the French way of life, he cares.

Thanks for that. To be honest, I think that we've been in the period of chevlei mashiach for quite some time now. I just think that whilst we trust that what Hashem does is for the best, we are supposed to emulate Hashem's attributes of mercy and the like, which includes praying for rachamim on our fellow creatures.

I genuinely abhor violence, and as such, I condemn violence on the part of both sides of the conflict in France, and deplore the loss of life, including the lives of "youths, teenagers and militants", and call on both sides to exercise restraint.
