I love listening to R' Kessin's perspective, but the whole topic of the difference between Jew and the Nations has always made me uncomfortable.
Isn't the whole point of the Jews that they are to be average humans who happen to have possession of The Truth, and whose job it is to disseminate it by living the Torah? What good is it to have Jews be a different species, or a qualitatively 'different kind of human'? Besides, the Jewish People have (and have always had) their share of wicked folks -- and calling those people "Erev Rav" sounds like a cop-out.
I dunno. I guess it makes more sense to me that Jews are regular humans who go through history and experience the world through the lens of "possessors of Ultimate Truth".
To Anon above: Jews are humans just like all other people! But, they are never considered human by most of the nations who really despise the Jews; this is called kinah v'sinah - jealousy & hatred. The Jews are known for their compassion and charitable ways. The reason we have so many that are far from good people IS because we have the Erev Rav amongst us. One of the first signs of the Erev Rav is that they are usually men/women of wealth and in powerful positions; not your everyday Joe. These are the descendants and/or reincarnations of the 2 million or so of the mixed multitude that came along with us. When Moshe Rabbeinu asked G-D if they could come along with us because they came to him to ask to be part of the Jewish nation, H' answered him not with a "No" but he warned him they are NOT sincere! The question is why did H' allow their shlepping along; the answer is most likely because they had a mission. Everything in life is a test and the real Jewish people needed these greedy and slick people for us to have reached this point in history where we were able to get the nations to accept after the most horrific genocide ever, that we can return to our Homeland, Israel. During our long and bitter exile, we were not allowed to force our way back home as a people. Individually, there were always Jews in the Land of Israel but under the control of other nations. This is why, I believe, the Erev Rav were allowed to join with us. Their mission is almost over, at this time of history, there will be clarification. The coming of Moshiach tzdkeinu is very close and everything will be clear to all of humanity. There is no cop-out here. We have been chosen as G-D's people because HE chose us because of the righteousness of our forefathers and foremothers and we are their descendants. If the nations would have realized from the start how they would have benefitted by realizing there is only Hashem and lived by the '7 Laws of Noach', all the evils and hardships which had befallen not only the Jews but all of humanity would not have ever taken place and the world would have been like a Garden of Eden for all of humanity. It's really quite simple.
Rabbi Efraim Palvanov What is the significance of recent seismic events in Syria and Damascus? What might we expect for the region in light ...

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Podcast from Rabbi Kessin, not sure when it was recorded:
The Key to Both Worlds
Make all the anonymous folks have some kind of ID. It's ridiculous.
Yes it would be good if the Anonymous people gave themselves a name so we can identify them somehow.
