Chabad Rabbi Kidnapped in UAE

 Update:  He was murdered by terrorists


Israel's intelligence agency Mossad launched an "active investigation" into the case of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a Chabad Shliach in the United Arab Emirates who has been missing. 

Kogan reportedly had a meeting in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Office in Jerusalem last week. 

Israel Prime Minister’s Office released the following statement on behalf of the Mossad and the National Security Council: 

“Zvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan citizen, a Chabad emissary in the UAE, has been missing since Thursday, November 21, 2024. 

 “Since his disappearance, and given information indicating that this is a terrorist incident, an active investigation has been going on in the country. 

 “Israeli security and intelligence organizations, concerned for Kogan’s safety and well-being, have been working tirelessly on this case. 

 “This also serves as a reminder that for a while, per the recommendations of the National Security Council, there has been a level 3 – moderate travel warning issued for the UAE, with a recommendation to avoid any non-essential travel there and for those who are in the country – take extra precautions.” 

Rabbi Kogan, who was raised in Jerusalem, served in the Givati Brigade operational military unit of the Israel Defense Forces. He got married 3 years ago to Rivky Spielman of Crown Heights, a niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, the Chabad Shliach killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. 

Security officials suspect that Rabbi Kogan, who resides in Abu Dhabi, was tracked by Islamic terrorists who later fled to Turkey. They believe he disappeared from a location approximately an hour and a half from Dubai, where he operates the Rimon kosher supermarket in the center of Dubai. 

According to a report on the Ynet news website, Rabbi Kogan was in Jerusalem this past Tuesday, where he attended a meeting in the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The meeting was with Yossi Shelley, the Director-General of the Prime Minister’s Office, who has been approved as Israel’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. According to Ynet, both Shelley and Rabbi Kogan traveled to the Emirates the next day, Wednesday.

Body and Soul

The Zohar teaches that Sarah represents the body, whereas Avraham represents the soul.  Even after death, the soul still remains related to the body, thus "Avraham - the soul - came to eulogize Sarah - the body - and to weep for her"  [Chayei Sarah 23:2]

Chassidic teachings emphasize the importance of the body as a tool in the service of G-d.  Since the ultimate purpose of creation is to sanctify the physical world, the body has a distinct advantage over the soul, in that it is the means by which G-d's Will is enacted.  Therefore, G-d told Avraham [the soul] "Whatever Sarah - the body - tells you, listen to her voice" [21:12], indicating that there is an inherent superiority to the body, over the soul.

Although the soul is incomparably more refined than the body, nevertheless, in the times of Moshiach we are promised that the superiority of the body will be revealed such that "the soul will be animated by the body".

"He who possesses a beneficient eye shall be blessed." [Proverbs 22:9]

There is a “beneficient eye” and an “evil eye”. Both terms have been used for several millennia and are found in the Talmud as indicators of the measure of a man.

Abraham was the paradigm of one who possesses a “beneficient eye”. He always looked for good in others, and felt neither jealousy of, nor hatred for, his fellow man. Bilaam, on the other hand, epitomized the possessor of an “evil eye” – one who always looks for fault or is jealous of another’s possessions or status.

The Talmud, when referring to the evil eye, credits it with almost mystical powers. Looking at another’s possessions with jealousy in your eyes can cause evil to befall that person. For this reason Talmudic law forbids us to build our homes too close to that of our neighbours. Privacy is very important, lest we look upon our neighbours’ possessions with a covetous eye. Neighbours should maintain a reasonable distance between one another, or, at the very least, homes should be built with a separation and a space between them.

Having an “evil eye” is usually understood as looking at another person with the intent that evil should befall him. It also includes coveting another’s possessions, being annoyed at his success (as if his success somehow impinges on our ability to succeed in life), pettiness and so on.

Rebbe Nachman teaches that an evil eye leads to an increased breathing rate. Somehow, jealousy and rage at another’s success causes one to draw breath at an accelerated pace.The Talmud therefore teaches “The cup of benediction at the conclusion of a meal should be given to one with a good eye. It is thus written (Proverbs 22:9) “He who possesses a beneficient eye shall be blessed.” Do not only read “shall be blessed” but shall bless….”

Conversely, one should beware of people with stingy and jealous eyes, as King Solomon cautions (Proverbs 23:6) “Do not break bread with [one who possesses] an evil eye”.

It is not merely a matter of superstition. As much as a good eye blesses, an evil eye takes. The source of the power of the evil eye is greed. When one looks upon another's possessions with greed, and the other is in any way guilty of mis-using his money, or is otherwise unworthy of the wealth he possesses, he might lose his possessions, G-d forbid. Clearly the way we look upon another's possessions can arouse Divine judgment against him. In the same vein, when we view the possessions of others generously, we can with a mere look of our eyes, bring blessing upon them.

When we realise that the eyes are the "windows to the mind" the significance of "evil eye" increases.

Rebbe Nachman taught: Memory depends upon the eyes, as in (Exodus 13:9) "[the tefillin shall be as] a remembrance between your eyes". In order to guard one's memory, one must first guard oneself from an evil eye - from evil thoughts about others, from jealousy, and from all forms of negativity. The evil eye can cause harm not only to the one being focused upon, but also to the one who is focusing, to an even greater degree. Conversely, maintaining an evil eye goes hand in hand with forgetfulness."

Yet we needn't live in constant fear of the evil eye, of others who may wish us harm. Rebbe Nachman teaches that if we feel incapable of guarding ourselves against an evil eye, then we should flee from it. However, if we can come to understand the essence of the evil eye, our actions can be far more effective: we can rectify it.

For example, a person might have an evil eye against another's position in life. This evil eye stems from the fallen attribute of Malkhut (kingship) which, when blemished, leads to low self-esteem and the need to put others down in order to get ahead. To correct one's own fallen Malkhut, one should strive to elevate G-d's Malkhut - by learning Torah or by otherwise disseminating G-d's Name in the world. In this way, one demonstrates one's allegiance to G-d, rather than to one's own need for self-aggrandizement. This serves to rectify the evil eye of the fallen Malkhut at its root.


When you invite jealousy, you're inviting negative energy from someone else. For this insensitivity or transgression on your part, you may incur a Divine consequence of losing some of your blessing. [If you give a child a toy and he hits his little brother with it, you might take the toy away. He's not using it the way you intended.]

Another spiritual rule that the kabbalists describe, explains the evil eye like this:

When someone stares at your blessing and thinks, "Why should so-and-so have that brand new Hummer? He's not so righteous. Why is God rewarding him?", it's like a complaint to Heaven, and an accusation that gets registered. The heavenly court then examines you and your blessing to determine if you in fact deserve it. If you don't, your blessing may be damaged or lost.

Of course, the accuser doesn't get off scott free, either, because then the heavenly court decides to investigate the accuser. "Who is this that comes to judge My child?" God asks.

So it's always a bad idea to give someone else an evil eye. And it's a bad idea to expose yourself to it, too.

11 Cheshvan: Yarzheit Rochel Imeinu






Jewish Mother's Day The 11th of Cheshvan

One of the most important days in the month of Cheshvan is the 11th, which commemorates the day of passing of our matriarch Rachel. Rachel was Jacob's most beloved wife and was the principal of his household and thus the principal of the entire house of Israel. From the first day of the year, the 1st day of Tishrei, the 11th day of Cheshvan is the 41st day. 41 is the numerical value of the Hebrew word "eim," which means "mother," thus the 11th of Cheshvan is truly the Jewish Mother's Day.

"Rachel cries for her children, she will not be comforted…"

Rachel constantly mourns over the exile of her children, the Jewish people, and the Almighty comforts her with the words: "Withhold your voice from crying and your eyes from tearing, for there is a reward for your actions… and the children will return to their border." Literally, "return to their border" refers to the return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel. But, more deeply, it refers to the return of our people to our natural spiritual environs: Judaism and our ancestral Jewish nature. These are the borders that truly circumscribe the uniqueness of our people. Amazingly, numerically, the value of the Hebrew word for "border" (g'vul / גבול) is exactly the same as the value of the word for "mother" (eim / אם); both equal 41.

In Hebrew, Cheshvan is written with the four letters: חשון. The borders (the first and last letters) of Cheshvan are chet - ח and nun - ן, which together spell the word chein - חן, meaning "beauty." The word chein - חן, "beauty" equals 58. The 58th day of the year is the 28th day of Cheshvan.

Rachel is described as the most beautiful woman in the Torah. The numerical value of the two middle letters, shin and vov, שו, is equal to isha -אשה , meaning "woman." Thus, the name of the month itself hints at the special and unique grace endowed to women.

King Solomon says that external beauty by itself is deceitful. If external beauty is all that a woman seeks then the name of the month becomes Marcheshvan, which means Bitter-Cheshvan. It is of such a woman King Solomon says: "And I find the woman to be more bitter than death." But, of true beauty, the beauty of a Jewish woman that emanates from within, he says: "The woman of beauty shall support honor." This true beauty is given to us, the Jewish people, by G‑d through the Torah, for "there is no truth but Torah" and "there is no honor but Torah."

It was Rachel, who was first endowed with this real beauty. Rachel is described as the most beautiful woman in the Torah, "She had a beautiful face and a beautiful figure." Thus, Rachel was the embodiment of the verse: "A woman who fears G‑d, she shall be praised," praised both for her grace and true beauty.

The beauty of the Jewish woman is not just a passive agent of spirituality. The sages teach that the offspring of Esau and his grandson Amalek can be defeated only by the children of Rachel.

Who embodies the spirit of Amalek in our day and age? In Hebrew, the words "Amalek" (עמלק) and "doubt" (safek / ספק) have the same numerical value. Thus, the spirit of Amalek that continues to plague each and every Jew is doubt; doubt in our faith, doubt in our Torah, and doubt in ourselves and the moral justification of our path.

But, sometimes the spirit of Amalek becomes bolder and captures a Jew (whether he be a private individual or a political figure) to the point of driving him or her to unconscious or even conscious self-hatred. This can result in a Jew's cooperation with the enemies of our people.

Finally there are the direct spiritual offspring of Amalek: those enemies who threaten the lives of Jews and our return to the Land of Israel.

The sages say that beauty is a woman's weapon. With everything that we have said about Rachel, her role as our matriarch, as the progenitor of Jewish nature, and of her beauty, it should now be clear that our weapon for defeating Amalek is the special beauty and grace of the Jewish mother. Joseph the tzaddik (righteous one) inherited his mother Rachel's beauty and he too is described as having a beautiful face and a beautiful figure. That is why the prophet says about him that "the house of Jacob will be fire and the house of Joseph its flame and the house of Esau straw, and together they will ignite him and consume him; and there will be no remnant for the house of Esau."

True Jewish beauty and grace destroy the enemy indirectly but, beauty is no regular weapon. True grace and beauty work by attracting the sparks of holiness that are bound within the enemy. These sparks are G‑d's will that the enemy still exist. Yet, when they are redeemed by their attraction to true beauty, they escape the enemy's grasp, leaving him void of any Divine source and causing his demise. True Jewish beauty and grace destroy the enemy indirectly by leaving him void of any beauty or grace himself, making him irrelevant and powerless.

The battle against Amalek in our generation must be conducted primarily with our ability to communicate to all around us the true nature of Jewish beauty and grace. It is to this beauty of Jewish nature and character that we return during the month of Cheshvan by reconnecting with our matriarch Rachel, with our own Jewish nature, and with ourselves.

This represents the unparalleled quality of the "Jewish mother" who is always willing to sacifice her own needs, spiritual or physical, for the sake of helping her children.

And this is the inner reason why Jewish identity follows the maternal and not the paternal route. For even though the father possesses a greater degree of spirituality - since he has the privilege of observing more mitzvos than a woman - the quality of a Jewish mother is nevertheless greater, that she is willing to forego much of that spirituality in order to enable her to raise a family with tender loving care. And since this quality is even more quintessentially Jewish than the spirituality of the man, it is the mother that actually makes her children Jewish.

Mama Rochel understood that tending to a broken heart comes above even Kavod Hashem....

When Rochel, out of frustration, complained to Yaakov about not having children, Yaakov got angry with her. The mefarshim say, based on a medrash, that Yaakov was punished for getting angry at Rochel and telling her that she needs to daven to Hashem and not complain to him.

Rav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro points out that Yaakov was defending Kavod Shamayim (the honor of Heaven) and was correct that Rochel's complaints were unjustified. His mistake was that he addressed the words that she spoke and not the pain in her heart. Had he pierced the veil of her soul, he would have known that because of her anguish, the words escaped her mouth and she was not accountable for them. He should have been slower to defend Kavod Shamayim and faster to understand human suffering.

This he explains was the greatness of Rochel. After the destruction of the first Temple, when Bnei Yisroel went into Galus, all the Avos and Imahos came before Hashem with all their great zechusim but were turned away empty handed. All the heroism of the Akeida, Yaakov's Torah, and lives of pure mesiras nefesh to build Klal Yisroel, did not impress Hashem in that dark moment of history.

The only one who merited Hashem's attention was Rochel Imeinu. What was her great act that warranted this special treatment? That she gave the simanim to her sister and helped fool Yaakov. With this bravery, in her mind, she was sabotaging the history of the Jewish nation since she understood that it was her and Yaakov that were destined to build the nation. Nevertheless she chose to cast aside her own destiny and Hashem's grand plan in order to save her sister from a single embarrassing moment.

Only Rochel, who had such a deep understanding of another person's pain and how it carries more weight than the entire Jewish experience, can be Hashem's emissary to bring his children's pain before Him. Only tears from Mama Rochel can bring the Geula.

When a person is in a state of small-mindedness (mohin d'katnus), he gives birth to the souls of converts. (1) This is the meaning of: "the souls that they made in Haran," which is the three aspects of Elokim in Smallness, having the numerical value of the word Haran (2).

(1) This idea, found throughout the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, is based upon the principle of root and branch souls. When a root soul falls to a lower level, it is in order to raise up the "branch" souls that are connected to him, who themselves are on a low level. Although converts may have very high souls - according to the Talmud, they observe the mitzvos with more exactitude than born Jews - before their conversion, their souls are locked in a Gentile body. A similar teaching can be found in the writings of the Baal Shem Tov concerning ba'alei teshuva - returnees to Judaism. Their ability to repent comes from the influence of a Tzaddik who has fallen to a lower level and raised himself again.

It is necessary to understand why G·d created a situation in which a Tzaddik falls from his level. It would certainly be better for him to remain constantly on his level and serve G-d with an expanded consciousness and to love Him perfectly. The Baal Shem Tov and my Master, Rabbi Dov Baer (the Maggid of Mezritch) explained it as follows. When the Tzaddik falls from his level and endeavors to regain his strength, he creates the souls of converts. This is like someone who wants to take his friend out of the mud. He also has to go down into the muck to raise him up." [See Kedushas Levi, by R. Levi Yitzchok of Berditchov, on the verse: "Your ointments have a goodly fragrance" (Song of Songs 1:3)]

(2) G-d's Name "Elokim" has the numerical value of 86. When multiplied by three, gives the number 258, which is the numerical value of the word "Haran." The implication is that when Abraham and Sarah were in the land of Haran - in a state of small-mindedness - they gave birth to the souls of converts: "the souls that they had made in Haran."

Sparks of Holiness





"They will leave with substantial wealth" [Lech Lecha 15:14]

The above verse indicates that amassing wealth was one of the purposes of Egyptian exile.  For this to be achieved, it was necessary for Yosef to become the ruler of Egypt and gather wealth from all the other lands.

According to chassidic teachings, ''sparks of holiness'' are trapped within the physical world and are released when a Jew takes the object and uses it to perform a mitzvah.  Therefore, one of the inner purposes of exile is for the Jew to utilize physical objects in the service of G-d.

Thus, someone who truly desires to cleave to G-d needs to involve himself in the physical performance of mitzvot, for this is also the only way he can fulfill his soul's mission.

The Hebrew name for Scorpio is "Akrav" - Scorpion. Our sages teach us that the scorpion is the most deadly member of the general category of poisonous creatures whose archetypal figure is the primordial snake of Eden. The word akrav derives from the word akev, "heel," as is said: "and you [the snake] shall bite him [man] at the heel" (Genesis 3:15). Thus the akrav symbolizes the consummate "bite" of the snake at the heel of man. While in general, the poison of the snake is "hot," the poison of the scorpion is "cold."


Midrash Tanchuma explains the proximity of Cheshvan to the month which follows it, Kislev:
One who remains rebellious (i.e. who does not repent) experiences a descent to the lowest levels - like a scorpion crawling on the ground or thrown into the brambles. However, one who repents is shot forth like an arrow from the bow (the bow is the sign of Kislev).

The judgment which occurred in Tishrei can bring a person to a higher level if the opportunities for repentence are utilized. Or, a person can descend to a level which is lower than before the judgment took place. The task of this month is to determine honestly what one's personal experience has been and to determine how to improve upon it.

The Akrav is symbolic of descent into that state of nothingness and silence which is known as gehinnom. It is a state in which actions not done are measured against those that were done. Imprisoned by non-activity, the soul, always yearning to move ahead, is punished by being held back. This is known among the commentators as "going through fire", for its purpose is to cleanse the soul much as metal is purged of dross. After undergoing this process of purification, the soul is ready to enter into a state of Paradise to enjoy the pure fruits of its labour.

The month of Cheshvan is a time for orderly study at the onset of a new year. It is the time when lessons can be learned from the past and preparations can be made for the future.

Cheshvan is called "chodesh bul", from the word mabul, (the flood). The flood began on the 17th of Cheshvan, and ended the following year on the 27th of Cheshvan. The following day, the 28th of Cheshvan, Noah brought his sacrifice to G-d and G-d swore never again to bring a flood upon the earth to destroy all mankind, and then revealed the sign of His covenant with the world, the rainbow.

Cheshvan is the only month which has no holidays or special mitzvot. We are taught that it is "reserved" for the time of Mashiach, who will inaugurate the third Temple in Cheshvan.

Motzei Shevi'it


                                             


The Vilna Gaon quotes the Gemara Sanhedrin 97A  that Moshiach will come Motzei Shevi'it - which means "after the seventh".

The Gemara describes the seven years before Mashiach's arrival. 
In the first two years, the rain will be different. 
During the third year, many tzaddikim will be niftar. This will continue into the first half of the fourth year, the last six months of which will be good. These are understood to be the Covid years. 
In year five, the Gemara tells us, "Torah chozeres el lomdehah" - we'll come back to the Torah. Yeshivos and batei medrash will re-open, and we'll experience shefa in both ruchniyus [spirituality] and gashmiyus [physicality]. 
ln the sixth year, the year after shemittah, there will be rumors that Mashiach is coming. 
The seventh year - 5784, according to this cheshbon - will be full of wars.

We see from Tikkunei Zohar 28b that HKB"H will destroy the Erev Rav between the 6th and 7th hour, which is the time that they sinned with the golden calf - because that is when the Redemption process begins. And that began at the time of 6.5 hours of the day, during Minha Gedola.  

I think that we are currently in the 7th hour of the sixth day 12pm-1pm: 12.49pm actually, if you look at the Cosmic Clock in my left column.  If anyone reading this is certain that we are in the seventh hour, please leave a comment, I have no idea how to calculatte any of this.

The Zohar even states that it is not God’s will to reveal the arrival date of the Moshiach, but when the date draws near, even children will be able to make the calculation [Bereishis 118a]. According to the Vilna Gaon, there seems to be little problem making the calculation from his commentary, but one who does must promise not to reveal his finding to another: “And from here [what I have just written] you can calculate the time of the Final Redemption if, God forbid, we do not merit [to bring it earlier]; however, I have imposed an oath, in the name of the God of Israel, on the reader of this that he should not reveal it.” [Biur HaGra, Sifra D’Tzniuta, Chapter Five]

The End of Days

As the world stands at the brink, we can hear the echo of Mashiach's footsteps. We're all waiting, holding tightly to the unbroken ring of betrothal, knowing that the Geulah is close. It is in these moments, filled with both heartbreak and hope, that Rav Shiomo Alon publishes his illuminating Sefer Hilchesa LiMeshicha.

School was out, shuls were shuttered, news of new deaths swept through still streets. The year was 2020; Covid19 raged everywhere. It was in this darkness that Rav Shlomo Alon took to the keyboard, spreading Hilchesa liMeshicha—the laws of our faith. of our future—to uplift a nation. Published weekly and distributed to local Shuls in humble booklets in both Hebrew and English—and soon their email form counterparts—these writings grew wings and traveled the globe. 

Most recently. he published two full-length sefarim: one in Hebrew and the other in English. titled Hilchesa LiMeshicha. which are loosely based on the original. The sefarim have haskamos from Rav Malkiel Kotler, Rav Yaakov Forchheimer. and Rav Shlomo Miller among others. 

Light in Dark Places

"While hilchesa liMeshicha isn't a new subject to me, the urgency to share it arose during the difficult times of Covid.   Klal Yisrael was in need of chizuk. a boost of strength and hope." says Rabbi Alon.

"The Chafetz Chaim posed a critical question:  How can we daven for Mashiach. reciting 'Al kein nekaveh lecha" three times a day, if we don't understand the halachos that will apply when He arrives?  He stressed the importance of studying Kodshim. the laws surrounding korbanos, and highlighted the need to understand Taharos. Unlike much of Kodshim, which primarily pertains to kohanim and levi'im, Taharos applies to every single Yid." 

Before the second Beis Hamikdash was built, Chagai Hanavi tested the kohanim on the halachos of Taharos—though the Gemara debates whether they knew the answers. 

The Chafetz Chaim wrote that before the third Beis Hamikdash is rebuilt, Hashem will again send individuals, possibly nevi'im, to test our knowledge of the laws of tumah [impurity] and taharah [purity]," relates Rabbi Alon. "Seder Taharos constitutes a sixth of Shas. It's an essential part of the Torah, yet many are unfamiliar with its halachos. We can't enter the Beis Hamikdash or partake in korbanos [sacrifices] if we're tamei. What will we do if we lack this foundational knowledge?" 

The Chafetz Chaim identified this time as ikvesa d'Meshicha [footsteps of Moshiach]—the era of redemption.  

How much more relevant is this today, nearly 100 years closer to the coming of Mashiach? What's our plan?" 

Signs of the Times

 "You don't have to be a navi to see that the world isn't operating as normal these days," says Rabbi Alon. "The signs of change are everywhere." 

Among other gedolim, Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky said that the current war was the beginning of Milchemes Gog U'magog, which will culminate with the coming of Mashiach. The Navi [Yechezkel 32 and 38] describes the time of the Geulah, when Edom and Yishmael will clash over Eretz Yisrael, eventually killing each other out—a scenario that seems increasingly relevant today. 

Tensions are high, with nations brandishing their nuclear arsenals and making threats. Chazal say that the year that Mashiach will be revealed, "Kol umos ha'olam misgarim zeh im zeh" all nations will turn against each other. 

In Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer [perek 30], we learn of three major wars to come. One of these is to be fought at sea—a concept that puzzled us until now. With 500 American warships in the Mediterranean today, we can understand what a conflict al hayam means. [This is also mentioned in Zohar Chadash, parshas Ki Savo, and there it says that Hashem will bring a wave that will sink all those boats.]

The Mishnah speaks of the "anshei hagevul" the Yidden living on the borders of Eretz Yisrael, who will roam from place to place without anyone showing them compassion before Mashiach comes. Today, we see the plight of those displaced from their homes in the north and the south moving from hotel to hotel, facing uncertainty and despair. 

The Zohar teaches that we'll experience 70 years under the leadership Of the Erev Rav [often interpreted as the current Israeli government] before Mashiach arrives. The Chafetz Chaim noted that the Geulah will come 10 shmittos after the Holocaust. 

Long-Awaited Wedding

In his sefer Hilchesa LiMeshicha, Rabbi Alon weaves together numerous nevuos and Chazals about the future redemption. 

"For many, the concept of Mashiach can be frightening," he explains. "There will be war, and we wonder if we'll have the zechusim [merit] to make it through. While unfortunately common, this sentiment is deeply distorted. 

"The rebuilding of the third Beis Hamikdash is described as a Yom simchas libo—the day of His happiness. The streets will flood with people singing and rejoicing, bringing korbanos todah to the Beis Hamikdash. We'll experience 'nagilah v'nismichah bach' an era of true joy like we've never known.

"Mattan Torah marked the engagement of Klal Yisrael to Hashem Today, we yearn for the marriage - the day of "Yasis aleyich Elokayich" .

The Countdown

The Gemara describes the seven years before Mashiach's arrival.

"We don't know Hashem's cheshbonos [calculations]; the actual time of the Geulah is hidden from us, and our focus isn't on pinpointing an exact date for Mashiach's coming. However, the purpose of the simanim Chazal gave us is so that when you see this unfold in front of your eyes precisely  the way described in Chazal, know that the time for the Geulah is very close, and prepare yourself accordingly. 

What we do know is that Mashiach's arrival is imminent, and we must not allow ourselves to be victims of the most embarrassing situation, greeting Mashiach as am ha'aratzim [literally men of the land, unlearned in Torah], not being adequately ready when he comes."  

We're like a kallah getting ready for her wedding. When the chosson sees how eagerly His bride is preparing, he'll hopefully come to the wedding sooner. 

"Hakadosh Baruch Hu told us that the first two Batei Mikdash would be temporary. They would be followed by a long galus, during which Klal Yisrael would prove their loyalty to Him. Ultimately, we'll merit the third and final Beis Hamikdash. 

When Mashiach finally arrives, Hashem will rejoice like a groom with his bride.  The entire world awaits our grand wedding.

With What Will We Greet Him?

A bride prepares for her wedding by donning kishutei kallah - her jewelry and adornments. In essence, the very fact that we were loyal to Hashem and kept His mitzvos throughout the entire galus is the most beautiful adornment with which we're greeting Hashem, as the Navi says, "Pischu she'arim v'yavo goy tzaddik shomer emunim" - open the gates for the righteous nation that was loyal to Me. 

The same is mentioned in Shir Hashirim:  "You will sing from the summit of faith." 

Geulah will come in the merit of our emunah, which has held strong even through the prolonged and painful galus. 

"Look what a shining kallah Klal Yisrael is today. We're studying every section of Torah like never before. We're giving tzcdakah and strengthening our emunah and bitachon in unprecedented numbers. Every mitzvah we perform makes us more beautiful and ready for Mashiach." 

As in the mashal of the kallah, part of the preparation is learning the halachos of marriage. So too, it's upon Hashem's kallah to prepare herself now, through learning the Hilchesa l'Meshicha, so that she'll be ready for the greatest wedding in history. 

"Besides everything we mentioned, it's an obligation to be doresh tziyon. As the Navi laments, "Tziyon hi doresh ein la"-  no-one is seeking after Tziyon. The Gemara says that we must actively seek the Beis Hamikdash, and one crucial way to do this is by learning the halachos that will apply when it's rebuilt.

The Gemara indicates that once Mashiach arrives. there will be only a few moments before the kohanim begin their avodah. There's a she'ei-lah [question] whether a kohen can drink wine today, as he likely won't have the time to sleep it off before serving in the azarah. The Gemara teaches that a Yid should always be ready for Mashiach's arrivnl." 

Until We Beg
The second way is through tefillah. Rashj in Hoshe'a [3:5], quotes Chazal, listing three things that Klal Yisrnel has rejected that we can only reclaim after we earnestly beg for them: malchus Shamayim, malchus beis David, and the Beis Hamikdash. Today, we yearn for all three. 

"The world is filled with chillul Hashem; His presence is denied from every comer of society. We long for the elevation of malchus Shamayim and the restoration of malchus beis David, which upholds Hashem's sovereignty. For two thousand years, Hakadosh Baruch Hu and His people have been homeless, longing for the closeness of the Beis Hamikdash, our cheder yichud with Hashem."

The Chafetz Chaim emphasized the importance of gathering to daven for Geulah. Nowadays, there are tefillah asifos [prayer gatherings] for Mashiach throughout Eretz Yisrnel and even here in Lakewood. Whether in public gatherings or in private tefillos, it's essential for us to beg Hashem for the Geula.

Spreading Hope

More than a sefer, it's a movement. Hilchesa LiMeshicha sparks discussion, excitement. and increasing awareness of the topic. With encouragement from Rav Yaakov Forchheimer, Rabbi Alon has been delivering popular shiurim in Lakewood on this topic. The movement is gaining momentum. "Many chaburos are now dedicated to learning Taharos.  People are recognizing the importance of the limud.

The awareness is palpable, crossing the mechitzah. For example, "In one gilyon, it was discussed how after Mashiach's arrival, women will give birth daily. Later, two women at a bus stop were overheard exchanging thoughts on the phenomenon. Men are corning home and sharing what they've learned about Mashiach with their wives.

"Embracing a Mashiach mindset transforms everything: our focus on tzipisa l'yeshuah, our davening, and our entire avodas Hashem," closes Rabbi Alon. "I hope and daven that this limud [learning]  continues to spread.   May we soon be zocheh to fulfill hilchesa liMeshicha."

Yarzheit Vilna Gaon / Gog u Magog Sukkot

The yarzheit of the Vilna Gaon is today, 19 TIshrei.

Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna - The Vilna Gaon - Leader of Lithuanian Jewry, Torah scholar and kabbalist. Born: Vilna, Lithuania, 1720   Left this world on: 19 Tishrei  Vilna, Lithuania,1797

Popularly referred to as the Vilna Gaon, the Gra (initials of Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu), or simply as the Gaon. Considered to be the greatest Torah scholar of the past two centuries.




Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein, speaking at his beis midrash in Ramat Elchanan, Bnei Brak, mentioned the great miracles that took place over the past year, when tens of thousands of rockets were fired from all directions, yet they did not cause many casualties. 

At the same time, the Rav referenced the words of the Bartenura in Maseches Megillah, who wrote: “It is a tradition passed down to us that the resurrection of the dead will occur on Pesach, and the War of Gog and Magog on Sukkos.” “Therefore,” he said, “we must strive not to spoil things. In other words, everything depends on us, on each and every one of us. This is a time of special favor, and we must try not to spoil it, meaning to make every effort to fulfill Hashem’s will, each person according to their ability.” 

Simultaneously, the Rav also mentioned the mesorah passed down through generations from the Vilna Gaon stating that the War of Gog and Magog will take place during three hours of Hoshanah Rabbah, and whoever wants to be saved should sit in the sukkah. Concerning this, it is said, “For He will conceal me in His sukkah on the day of evil” – the day of evil being the War of Gog and Magog – and whoever wishes to be saved should sit in the sukkah, said Rav Zilberstein. 

Rav Zilberstein noted that his brother-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky, said that these three hours refer to the hours before sunrise on Hoshanah Rabbah.

Israel will attack Iran, the United States will intervene and then Iran will fight against the United States. That's all. Rabbi Shimson Raphael Hirsch discusses the connection between the sukkah and the battle of Gog and Magog. . 

In the name Gog we see the word Gag, roof, something sturdy which has been built to protect us as opposed to the Sukkah which has a very weak roof made of twigs and branches. 

Just as people have the power to make themselves safe and secure by building strong roofs, so they delude themselves into thinking they can make themselves safe from that which comes from above, namely Hashem. They think they can find security in the protection of their own might. 

The battle of Gog and Magog is a battle of the Roof against the sukkah, the illusion of human strength and power against the sukkah truth of the confidence in Hashem's protection.

Now read this - 

The only time that Moshiach ben Yosef is mentioned in the Gemara is in Succah daf 52A. There the Gemara brings the passuk in Zechariah (12) which speaks of a great eulogy which will take place in the times of Moshiach. There is an argument as to who is the subject of the eulogy. One opinion is that they are mourning the death of Moshiach ben Yosef, and the other opines that they are mourning the death of the yetzer hara (evil inclination)......

....... it is the yetzer hara (evil inclination) that is being ‘eulogized.’ According to this opinion, Moshiach ben Yosef does not die, but rather, actually completes his task of destroying the forces of evil, and thus removes the evil inclination from the world (to a certain extent).  According to the Gra and others, indeed, the decree of death for Moshiach ben Yosef has been rescinded (עוד יוסף חי), and thus the second opinion of the gemara is the one that will actually play out in reality. This is due to the length of the exile the Jewish people has endured, which has actually completely atoned for the sin of Yerovom ben Nevat, and therefore removed the need for Moshiach ben Yosef’s death.

Destroying the World: A Possible Scenario

 

In its section on the biblical Book of Isaiah and the prophecies contained therein, a Rabbi cited by the Yalkut Shimoni states: 

“In the year Moshiach comes all the nations of the world will provoke each other and threaten with war. The king of Persia (Iran) will provoke the King of Arabia (Saudi Arabia) with war. The King of Arabia goes to Edom (The Western Countries, headed by USA) for advice. Then the King of Persia destroys the world (and since that cannot be done with conventional weapons it must mean nuclear which can destroy most of the world). And all the nations of the world begin to panic and are afraid, and Israel too is afraid as to how to defend from this. G-d then says to them “Do not fear for everything that I have done is for your benefit, to destroy the evil kingdom of Edom and eradicate evil from this world so that the Messiah can come, your time of redemption is now.”

How can the King of Persia [Iran] destroy the world?

Rav Yekutiel Fish posted an interesting quote from Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim from Luntschitz [who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries, more commonly known as the "Kli Yakar"] in his Kli Paz, indicating that the Milchemet [war of] Gog and Magog will be centered in an area he calls Hormuz...... 

In the sefer Kli Paz "The Vessel of Pure Gold" from the commentry Kli Yakar, who was a Rosh Rabbonim [head of the rabbis] in the land of Israel 400 years ago, ''that there will be a sacrifice in Basra'' [Isaiah 34] that should be in the war of Gog and Magog and that it should happen or occur in a place by Basra named Hormuz. And the Navi's words since the sacrifice to Hashem in Basra and the great slaughtering in the land of Edom and it will descend, animals with them and cattle with Abirim [the strong healthy bulls] since the day of vengeance is to G-d and the completion of years of fighting Zion.. And it says ''the animals will descend with them'' to tell you there are many kings in the remaining nations that will join with Edom to help him and the slaughtering to G-d in Basra - a country with a distance from Bavel - its name is Basra and it is next to Asher which is Assyria and Persia in between the boundary of the land of Edom - The Hormuz - and today it is under the rulership of Yishmael and blessed is the one who knows the truth of these things. However it will be there - the war in the end of days.

Here's my capture and rendition of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) captured about 5 hours ago (Oct 13 @ 19:35 local time) from San Luis Reservoir, California. I did not notice the anti-tail in the single frames, otherwise I would have framed it differently 😬😅 You may need to tap on the image to see the whole thing. I could see the comet with my eyes without any trouble, and much better with binoculars. Moonlight was annoying. Without moonlight, this comet would be putting a much bigger show. I used a Canon 70-200mm lens @ 145mm, and a Sony a7s camera. No tracking. 37 x 5 secs subs, f/2.8 @ ISO 1600.
