No Greater Mitzvah than Redeeming Captives [updated]

The Rambam

20 Tevet: Yarzheit of the Rambam - Moses Maimonides, Rav Moshe ben Maimon - who was among the greatest Jewish scholars of all time.

The Rambam famously said:  THERE IS NO MITZVAH AS GREAT AS PIDYON SHIVUYIM - Redemption of Captives.

It is recorded that a wagon carrying the Rambam’s body miraculously brought him to Teveria from his home in Egypt.

It is also the yarzheit of the Abir Yaakov.

If you listened to Rabbi Kessin's shiur last week The Power of Mashiach ben Yosef and the Upcoming Inauguration you will have heard this story from him.

To read the transcript of that shiur click here.

The Abir Yaakov Abuchatzeira, grand-father of the Baba Sali

At that time there lived in Jerusalem a holy Jew, Rabbi Yitzchak Alpheya. That same night he had a dream. He beheld a Jew of refined and impressive appearance, dressed in the distinctive garment of a Moroccan Torah scholar. His whole being compelled respect.

Turning to Rabbi Yitzchak he said: "You are accustomed to pray at the grave sites of righteous men, why do you not come to me?"

In his dream Rabbi Yitzchak answered him: "Who are you, honored sir, and where is your resting place?"

"I am Ya'akov Abuhatzeira."

"And where is your resting place?" repeated Rabbi Yitzchak.

"In Damanhur in Egypt", was the answer, and after a pause he added: "And now, go quickly to my grave; know that the saving of the Jewish People depends on you doing so!"   [Source]

You can do a virtual visit to his Kever by going to Expo Egypt where he is buried.

Rav Yaakov Abuchatzeira (1880), grandson of the founder of the Abuchatzeira family, Rav Shmuel (Elbaz), and son of Rav Masoud, who was Rav of Tafelaletch (Taflilat), Morocco. He took his father’s position upon the latter’s petira and built the yeshiva there, which produced thousands of students. He wrote many sefarim on all aspects of Torah, including Abir Yaakov. His grandson is Rav Yisrael, the Baba Sali, and his great-grandson is Rav Meir Abuchatzeira. In 1880, he attempted to move to Eretz Yisrael, but was nifter in Damanhur, Egypt, where he is buried. 1. Just to note here.... the Lubavitcher Rebbe told us that every day is connected to the day before it and the day after it. It is no coincidence that the three hostages were released on 19 Tevet, the day before the yarzheit of two of greatest Jewish holy men of all time, as these days are connected, as the Rebbe said.

  2. Redeem the Captives: Rabbi Ovadia Yosef writes in his ruling: “Most Rabbinic authorities are of the opinion that in a situation of danger, we do redeem captives for ‘more than their value’, and we have not found among the great Rabbinic authorities anyone who says the opposite. It seems that actually this is the course that we are compelled to take... And even when the ransom exceeds their value, and there is a concern that they will further raise the [ransom] fee, despite this, when there is an immediate danger, we do not take that into account, because in any case, they will do everything in their power to kidnap, kill, and murder in order to disrupt the ordinary course of life in the State of Israel…”
(Yabia Omer Part 10, Chapter 6, Section 6).

  3. This was written by Afshine Emrani, not me.

The scenes from Gaza are terrifying. I’ve never seen anything like this.
Imagine this: three innocent girls, finally free after months of unimaginable terror, surrounded by a sea of men driven by nothing but hate. Today, as these young hostages were being returned to safety, they were met not with relief but with a mob of thousands, their faces twisted with loathing, their voices a cacophony of anger.
What's even more harrowing? The International Red Cross, an organization meant to be a beacon of hope in times of crisis, did nothing to visit these hostages during their captivity. Not once did they check on their welfare, offer medical aid, or even acknowledge their existence. Their silence and inaction make them complicit in this horror.
After seeing this, I can no longer support the Red Cross. They've shown themselves to be just another hand of Hamas and the IRGC, operating under the guise of neutrality while allowing evil to fester unchecked. They had the power to intervene, to shine a light in the darkness, but chose not to - making them part of the problem.
Some of you might still harbor sympathy for "innocent Palestinians" because of the narratives spun by media outlets. But if you've held onto that belief, it's time to confront reality. Look at the videos from today, where these three girls, survivors of a nightmare, were subjected to further horror as they were escorted out.
The truth is stark and ugly. The hate, the violence, the sheer disregard for humanity - it's all there, captured in those chilling moments. It's time to question what we've been told, to see through the fog of misinformation. These scenes are not anomalies; they are reflections of a deeper, more pervasive issue.
Open your eyes. This isn't about politics or sides. It's about recognizing evil, about understanding that there's nothing innocent about hatred. And it's about holding so-called humanitarian organizations accountable for their failures.

  5. There are no innocent fakestinians. Perhaps babies under 9 months, before they've been dressed up in the jihad uniform and given an automatic to hold, before the indoctrination begins. After that, the innocence is gone.

  6. Alan M. Dershowitz writes: “The decision by the Israeli government to make significant concessions to the Hamas kidnappers should never be called a "deal." It was an extortion.... The kidnapping was a crime. And the extortionate demand was an additional crime.
So is the proper description of what occurred is that Israel, pressured by the United States, capitulated to the unlawful and extortionate demands of Hamas - as the only way of saving the lives of kidnapped babies, mothers and other innocent, mostly civilian, hostages.

This was not the result of a negotiation between equals. The terrorists are not constrained by morality, law or truth. When a terrorist group "negotiates" with a democracy, it always has the upper hand.

If every democratic nation adopted a policy of never negotiating with terrorists, it might discourage terrorism. But every nation submits to the demands of kidnappers and extortionists, so terrorism and hostage-taking have become a primary tactic of the worst people in the world. And the rest of us are complicit.

Especially complicit, with blood on their hands, are supporters of Hamas on university campuses who chant for intifada and revolution. Also complicit are international organizations, such as the International Criminal Court, that treat Israel and Hamas as equals.
Let us put the blame for ALL the deaths in Gaza where it belongs: on Hamas and the useful idiots and useless bigots who support murderous terrorists."

  7. Um, i've barely reached page 2 of the transcript. See, I was reading the below transcript-excerpt carefully, and sorry to say, but it's confusing. For example: Is yechidah part of the liver, as per the transcript (or not connected to the body, as per the transcript)? Also, it doesn't state where the nefesh resides.

The second idea that you have to understand is that the soul of a person, of a Jew, has five
parts; we know that. It's called “neiron chai” from the words “nivran chai.” The first letter “nun”
is “nefesh.” Then you have “ruach” which is the spirit. A third part is called the “neshamah”
which is an individual part named for the collective term of the soul. The fourth part which is
represented by the letter “ches” which is the “chayah.” Lastly, is the “yechidah,” a spiritual soul
and it “resides,” in some way, in the liver. The part called “ruach” resides in the heart. The
individual part called “neshamah” resides in the brain. Those are the major components. In
some way, they're all connected, in some fashion, to the physical body. Then you have what's called a “chayah” which is a part of the neshamah, a fourth part that surrounds the body and
it's not connected to any single organ but is connected to the body almost like an aura that
surrounds the entire body. The part called “yechidah” means the “unique one” and it’s not
connected in any which way to the body. The reason why it's called “yechidah” is because it is
the highest part of the soul that is connected to the Shechinah, the Divine Presence, to G-D, to
the Ein Sof—eternality. Those are the five parts of the neshamah. Every Jew has those five
parts; that's the first thing which is very important to know

    1. The nefesh is in the blood. That's why the blood is drained from the animal - Jews don't eat blood.

    2. The yechida is outside of the body, connecting us Above.

Quoting from Rabbi Palvanov, link below:

For those who do grow ever-higher, they may be able to access even loftier soul levels: the chayah and yechidah. In the Torah, we see many places where the soul is referred to as chayah, including right at the start where God breathes a soul into Adam and makes him l’nefesh chayah (Genesis 2:7). The chayah is sometimes described as an aura. It is not housed within the body, but glows outward, and plays an important role in the interactions between people. (Conversely, some early sources speak of the chayah as being within the body, and serving as its life force. See, for example, Beresheet Rabbah 14:9.)

Above it is the highest level of soul, the yechidah, “singular one”, which connects a person directly with God. It is like a divine umbilical cord, and one who realizes it and senses it may certainly draw through it information from Above.

    3. Thanks! You're really knowledgeable. Actually i can't fathom how anyone would want to eat blood. It's disgusting. There's still the loose end though, where the transcript states: "Lastly, is the “yechidah,” a spiritual soul
and it “resides,” in some way, in the liver.

So does yechidah reside in the liver - or is it totally outside like an umbilical cord?

    4. I'm only knowledgeable when I check my knowledge with someone who really knows ...

The Midrash states that the soul has five names: Nefesh (soul of vitality), Ruach (spirit), Neshamah (breath of life), Chaya (living one), and Yechidah (singular one).

Hassidism teaches that the Nefesh resides in the blood, Ruach in the heart, Neshamah in the brain. Chayah and Yechidah are transcendent of the body, not enclothing themselves in any particular limb.

    5. So to answer your question, yes the Yechidah is outside of the body, it reaches up to the highest levels.

I don't know where the liver thing came from, maybe it's just a different teaching somewhere, I really have no idea about that.

  8. Dershowitz quote:
But every nation submits to the demands of kidnappers and extortionists, so terrorism and hostage-taking have become a primary tactic of the worst people in the world.

Note: Dershowitz prudently omits the WHOLE truth, which is:
Every nation submits to the demands of kidnappers and extortionists WHO VERY LIKELY WERE/ARE TOOLS (front-people) MANIPULATED BY SAID "NATIONS" DEEP-STATE. Everyone knows that it's impossible for Hamas to have breached security to that degree on Oct.7th without having been enabled by the bad guys.

I do not have access to classified files of the IDF, Shin Bet, Aman and Mossad.
But it could have been possible for October 7th to have happened without any conspiracy.
It coudl have been a massive mess.

The political push was in "Conceptzia", the idea that Hamas would refrain from confrontation in exchange for money.
This mistaken idea governed most Israeli security thinking.
Bolstered by Hamas sitting out the "Operation Shield and Arrow in May 2023" when the IDF clashed with Islamic Jihad in Gaza.
That any Hamas manouvres and riots near the security fence in the months leading up to October 7th were training exercises to pacify their younger hotheads.
When the young IDF women who monitored the CCTV on the fence were warning their officers in spring and summer 20234 that activity in Gaza was leading to something, but were ignored by their commanders.

That Hamas activating hundreds of Israeli SIM cards in the hours before the invasion was regarded as preparation for some kind of cyber scam.

It is possible that such a fundamental misunderstanding of the Hamas/Jihadist mind state allowed October 7th to happen, and to me that is just as scary as a deep state conspiracy.

    1. If you look at the timeline of events from 2 days before to the day of the invasion and massacre, you'll see that the only thing occupying the minds of our so-called security establishment was the overthrow of Bibi Netanyahu. I received this timeline, and it's shocking. It wasn't only conceptzia. It was treason.
